Kigali to Musanze: The Road to the Volcanoes and the Gorillas

The road from Kigali to Musanze is the best-known route in Rwanda: a paved drive north through rolling hills to the foot of the Virunga volcanoes, where gorilla trekking begins.

Most visitors travel this road at least once, and many make the journey twice. It is a scenic, well-maintained road that gives a first sense of how densely cultivated and green the country is, before the volcano peaks appear ahead.

This guide explains how to plan the transfer, what to see on the way and how to make the most of your arrival.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

The Northern Road

The route leaves the capital, climbs through hills and winds across ridges before dropping towards the volcano plain. The road is paved and traffic is steady, with trucks, buses and motorcycles sharing the lanes. Sections near hill crossings can slow you down, so allow more time than the map suggests. As you approach Musanze, the cone-shaped volcanoes rise above the farmland, a sight many travellers photograph through the car window. Read the Volcanoes National Park access guide for the final approach.

Arrive

Arrive the Day Before

Gorilla trekking briefings begin early at the park headquarters, so the sensible plan is to travel to Musanze the day before your trek. This avoids a stressful dawn start from Kigali and gives you time to settle in. A day-trip option does exist, described in the one-day gorilla trek from Kigali, but it needs a very early departure and a long day. For permits and rules, see gorilla permits and trekking rules.

Stops

Stops on the Way

You can pause at a viewpoint, a roadside market or a craft cooperative. Musanze itself has a lively town centre and options nearby that make good afternoon activities; see things to do in Musanze. Lakes near the town and cave systems in the lava fields are popular half-day outings for visitors who are not trekking that day.

What

What Changes at Altitude

Musanze sits high, so evenings are cool and mornings can be damp. Pack warm layers, a waterproof jacket and sturdy boots for the forest. Take it easy on arrival if you are not used to altitude. Our packing list covers clothing for gorilla trekking.

Season

Season and Road Conditions

The main road is good all year, and rain mostly affects the smaller approach tracks. Dry months give clearer views of the volcanoes, while the wet seasons bring lush forest and fewer visitors. See best time to visit Volcanoes National Park.

Onward

Onward Journeys

From Musanze many itineraries continue to Lake Kivu via the Musanze to Rubavu road, or return to Kigali for a flight. Some travellers add the forest at Gishwati-Mukura or a trip to Nyungwe. Ask your operator to build in a rest afternoon after trekking rather than a long transfer.

Planning

Planning Around Trekking Day

Do not schedule a flight on the evening of your trek, and avoid long road transfers straight afterwards if you can. Trekking duration varies with where the gorilla family is that day. See Rwanda gorilla trekking for what to expect.
