Rwanda in February: Late Dry Season Trekking, Heroes Day and Couples Escapes

February is the last full month of Rwanda's shorter dry season, so trails are at their firmest, skies are often bright, and the country feels ideal for couples and first-time gorilla trekkers who want comfort without the mid-year crowds.

After the festive rush, the pace of travel eases in February. Visitors still arrive, but gorilla permit demand is calmer than in December or July, and lodges often have more choice. The weather remains generally dry, with the change to the long rains a few weeks away.

This guide treats February as a honeymoon and active-travel month, and explains Heroes Day, cycling season, hiking on the volcanoes and how to build in flexibility for the first signs of March rain.

This guide is part of our Uganda month-by-month and seasonal guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

What February Is Like

February tends to be sunny with cool, crisp starts in the highlands and warm afternoons. Mist can sit on the Virunga volcanoes at dawn and clear by mid-morning, which gives photographers soft light and then sharp views. In Kigali, evenings are comfortable for terrace dinners and the hills look slightly burnished after weeks of drier weather. By the final week, some years bring early cloud and the odd storm, a hint of the March rains, so it pays to keep a waterproof in the daypack. Overall, February is one of the more predictable months in the calendar. For a year-round comparison see best time to visit Rwanda.

Hiking

Hiking the Virunga Volcanoes

Dry ground makes February a favourite for volcano hikes. The ascent of Bisoke to its crater lake and the longer climb on Karisimbi are less muddy than in the rains, and views over the border into the neighbouring countries are more likely. The Dian Fossey hike to Karisoke is similarly pleasant. Fitness matters more than the weather on these routes, so train with steady uphill walks before you come. Porters are available and hiring one supports local families. Details are in the Virunga volcanoes guide and the Karisoke hike page. Allow a rest day after a long summit hike before a gorilla trek.

Gorillas

Gorillas, Golden Monkeys and Permits

February is a comfortable month for the main experience. Trails are drier, so the effort feels lower for the same distance, and the encounter itself, one hour with a habituated family, is as moving as at any time of year. Golden monkey tracking in the bamboo zone is also pleasant when the ground is firm. Permits for February are generally easier than for the festive weeks, but they remain limited and should still be reserved well ahead, particularly if you want a particular family or a specific start date. See gorilla families and trekking groups and golden monkey tracking.

Akagera

Akagera in the Late Dry Spell

By February the savannah in the east has dried, grass is shorter and animals follow water towards Lake Ihema and the smaller lakes. This helps game drives and boat trips, which show hippos, crocodiles, buffalo, giraffe and many bird species. A night drive can add smaller nocturnal animals. Daytime temperatures are noticeably higher than in the hills, so carry water, a hat and light long sleeves. It is also a good month to link a gorilla trek with a short savannah stay, because the road conditions are favourable. Our Akagera wildlife guide and Akagera activities page explain the options.

Heroes

Heroes Day, Cycling and Local Life

National Heroes Day on 1 February is a public holiday that honours those who served the country, so some businesses close and roads can be quieter. Rwanda also hosts a major international cycling race in many Februaries, and routes may be closed for stretches, which can change a transfer timetable, so ask your operator whether it overlaps your dates. Umuganda, the community work morning, still happens on the last Saturday of the month. Learning the basics of local custom adds warmth to any visit. See Rwandan culture and etiquette and coffee and tea tours for ideas.

A

A Honeymoon Shape for February

Couples often choose February for its reliability. A romantic plan might begin with a night in Kigali, then two nights near the volcanoes for a gorilla trek and a quiet evening by a fire, followed by a few days on Lake Kivu with kayaking, a sunset boat ride and a spa afternoon. Adding a night in Akagera brings a savannah contrast. Keep the schedule loose, because the point is time together rather than ticking sights. Our Rwanda honeymoon itineraries and Lake Kivu where to stay guide help you compare styles and settings.

Packing

Packing and Planning Notes

Pack layers for cool mornings, a rain shell in case a storm arrives early, a sun hat and sunscreen, and sturdy boots with grip. Gloves are useful on the nettle-lined gorilla trails. Book permits, internal transfers and accommodation several months ahead, and leave a spare day in the middle of your trip. Check requirements in the East Africa visa guide and use the packing list to prepare. If you are adding Uganda, see Uganda in February for how the neighbouring forests and parks compare.
