Rwanda in June: The Start of the Long Dry Season, Coffee Harvest and Chimpanzees
June is when Rwanda swaps rain for sunshine, so you get the long dry season's firm trails and clear skies with fewer visitors than in July and August.
The long rains retreat in late May, and by June the forests are still lush while the ground is drying. It is a shoulder month that often feels like the best of both: scenery that has not yet turned dusty and conditions that are broadly comfortable.
This guide concentrates on what is special about June: chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe, the tail of the coffee harvest, quieter permits and a good moment to build a longer itinerary.
This guide is part of our Uganda month-by-month and seasonal guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

A Month of Transition
In the first days of June the hills may still be damp from late rains, and it is wise to keep a waterproof handy. By mid-month, rain becomes rare in most areas and sunshine dominates. Cooler air settles across the highlands, with chilly mornings and evenings that surprise visitors who expect equatorial heat. The greenery remains vivid, which is attractive for photography, and dust has not built up yet in Akagera. For a seasonal overview, see the Rwanda best time guide and compare it with the Nyungwe best time page, since the forest has its own microclimate.
Nyungwe and the Chimpanzees
June is an excellent month for the forest. Trails are drier than in April, and walking in Nyungwe is less demanding, though the steep terrain means it is never an easy outing. Chimpanzee trekking begins early in the morning and may involve a long walk and some scrambling, so fitness and patience matter. Colobus monkeys, blue monkeys and many forest birds add to the walk, and the canopy walkway gives a high view across the treetops. Plan at least two nights in the area so you do not rush. Coffee Season Wrapping Up
Rwanda's main coffee harvest generally runs from the later rains into the early dry season, and June is often the final stretch. Visiting a washing station or a cooperative can show cherry sorting, fermentation tanks and drying beds in action, followed by a cupping session. Tea estates are active nearly all year, and walks among the bushes offer lovely views. These experiences fit well on a rest day between treks. Our coffee and tea tours page explains what to expect, and the food and drink guide covers local flavours.
Gorillas and Golden Monkeys in June
Gorilla trekking is comfortable as the ground firms, and permits are usually easier to obtain than in July, though advance booking still matters. Golden monkeys can be found in the bamboo zone, and bright conditions help photography once the morning mist lifts. Gorilla families may be found at varied altitudes depending on food, so trek lengths vary. Respect the rules on distance, no flash and staying with your guide. See Rwanda gorilla trekking and golden monkey tracking for details.
Events and Everyday Life
Rwanda often holds a well-known peace marathon in Kigali around mid-year, and some road closures may apply on the day, so ask your operator whether the dates overlap your stay. The country also continues its Umuganda tradition on the last Saturday. Liberation and Independence celebrations follow in early July. Mid-year is a good time for city tours, craft markets and visiting memorials with a knowledgeable guide. See Kigali travel guide and Rwanda culture and history itinerary.
A Ten-Day June Itinerary Idea
Start with two nights in Kigali, then drive to Musanze for a gorilla trek and a volcano or golden monkey day. Continue via Lake Kivu for a rest, then spend two nights at Nyungwe for chimpanzees and the canopy walk, and finish with a coffee estate stop on the return. If time allows, add Akagera on the way back to Kigali. Do not stack hard treks on consecutive days. Our Rwanda primates itinerary and 5 and 10 day Rwanda itineraries offer related shapes.
Packing and Planning Notes
Bring thermal layers for chilly mornings, a rain shell, strong boots, gloves and a warm hat for early starts. Book Nyungwe chimpanzee slots with your gorilla permits, as combined trips need coordination. Avoid planning travel on the last Saturday morning in Kigali because of Umuganda. See the packing list and Uganda in June for how the neighbouring forests behave at the same time.
