Things to Do in Akagera National Park: Drives, Boats, Birding and Night Safaris

Akagera suits a mix of game drives, boat trips on Lake Ihema, guided night drives and birding, and the best stays blend all four across two or three nights.

Akagera is Rwanda's only savannah park and the country's place for classic open-country safaris. Its mix of plains, acacia woodland, lakes and papyrus swamps means that different activities reveal different wildlife.

This page focuses on planning your days. For descriptions of each activity in detail, see our guide to Akagera game drives, boat trips and night safaris.

This guide is part of our Uganda park trails and activities guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

Building a Day

Wildlife is most active in the cool hours, so game drives work best soon after sunrise and again from mid-afternoon. The middle of the day suits a boat trip, a long lunch or a rest at camp. A well-paced day therefore alternates between vehicle and water, and gives photographers soft light at both ends. If you have only one day, choose a morning game drive followed by an afternoon boat cruise.

Game

Game Drives in Detail

The road network crosses open plains, thickets and lake margins, and a good guide reads signs such as alarm calls and fresh tracks. Typical sightings include zebras, giraffes, buffalo, topi, impala, waterbuck and elephants, with lions, leopards and rhinos rewarding patient searching. Reintroduced predators and rhinos are monitored by rangers, so sightings are more likely with a guide who shares information. Read about the park's recovery in the main Akagera guide.

Boat

Boat Trips on Lake Ihema

Cruises glide past hippo pods, basking crocodiles and fishing eagles, and the low angle makes for striking photographs. Birders should watch the papyrus edges for the gonolek and kingfishers. Late afternoon cruises tend to be the most atmospheric, with calmer water and warm light. Pair this with the East Africa birding guide if birds are a priority.

Night

Night Drives and After-Dark Wildlife

Guided night drives in park vehicles reveal animals that are seldom seen by day, such as genets, civets, bushbabies and nightjars, and sometimes hunting predators. Rangers control the route and the use of spotlights, so the experience is calm and well managed. See night drives and walking safaris in East Africa for what to expect.

Photography

Photography and Quiet Moments

Akagera rewards patience. Sit at a waterhole, scan the lake edge and let the park come to you. Our safari photography tips explain how to use light and position in an open vehicle. Families and older travellers appreciate that boat trips and short drives are gentle options.

How

How Many Nights?

One night allows a taste, two nights give a balanced mix of drives and a boat trip, and three nights add a night drive and unhurried birding. Combine Akagera with gorilla trekking on a five-day Rwanda itinerary or add it to a longer Rwanda safari itinerary.
