Huye (Butare) Guide: Rwanda's Museum Town, Arboretum and Gateway to Nyungwe

Huye, formerly known as Butare, is a calm university town in southern Rwanda that holds the country's national museum, a pleasant arboretum and a useful halfway stop between Kigali and Nyungwe Forest.

Many travellers drive past Huye without stopping, yet it offers a gentler, more cultural side of Rwanda than the gorilla parks. Its hills, tree-lined avenues and student life give it a unique atmosphere.

This guide explains what to see in town, how to reach it and how it fits into a southern Rwanda route.

This guide is part of our Uganda districts and towns guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

What Huye Is

Huye is the main town of Rwanda's Southern Province and long known as Butare. Its calm streets, hilltop views and academic setting give it a distinct personality, and it is regarded as one of the country's cultural and intellectual centres. The University of Rwanda campus brings students and a lively cafe scene, while the market and small shops serve the surrounding farming communities. It is smaller and quieter than Kigali, and walking around the centre is easy. See Kigali travel guide for the capital.

The

The National Museum

The Rwanda National Museum, often called the Ethnographic Museum, is widely regarded as the best museum in the country. Its galleries present Rwandan history, traditional life, crafts, agriculture, music and the royal court through carefully arranged displays. A visit gives helpful background for the rest of your journey. Allow a morning or a leisurely afternoon, and ask about guides and current opening times. Combine it with Rwanda culture and etiquette for context.

Arboretum

Arboretum and Walks

Ruhande Arboretum, a wooded area close to the town, holds a collection of tree species from different regions and is a good place for a gentle walk. Birdlife is attractive and the shade is welcome after a long drive. Visitors can also stroll through town to see colonial-era buildings, university areas and craft cooperatives, where you can buy baskets, ceramics and weaving made by local groups. Ask about the origin of items and fair payment when buying.

Getting

Getting to Huye

Huye is reached from Kigali by a paved road through hills and farmland, with a journey of a few hours that can be longer in traffic. The route passes Nyanza, former seat of the Rwandan monarchy, where the King's Palace museum is a worthwhile stop. See Kigali to Huye route for travel advice, and Huye to Nyungwe route for the next stage south-west.

Where

Where It Fits in an Itinerary

Huye is an ideal overnight for travellers going between Kigali and Nyungwe Forest, since it breaks the journey and adds cultural content without needing an extra day of driving. It also suits people who want a quiet town rather than a busy city. Combine it with Nyungwe National Park, the Rwanda culture and history itinerary and five and ten day itineraries.

Where

Where to Stay and What to Ask

Accommodation includes guesthouses, small hotels and a few larger properties, many with garden settings. See where to stay in Huye for details. Ask about distance to the museum, breakfast times for early departures, parking and whether transfers to Nyungwe can be arranged. Some places are close to the university and may be busy during term times.

Seasons

Seasons and Tips

Rwanda has two rainy seasons, roughly March to May and October to November, with the driest months in the middle and at the start of the year. Huye is mild and often cool in the evening. Carry a light jacket, comfortable shoes and cash for small purchases. Check museum hours before arrival and keep time for the road ahead.
