Gishwati-Mukura National Park Itineraries: Sample 1, 3 and 5 Day Plans

Gishwati-Mukura National Park offers quiet forest walks and primate watching in western Rwanda, and works best as a one- to three-day add-on beside Lake Kivu and the Volcanoes region.

Rwanda’s newest national park protects two forest remnants, Gishwati and Mukura, in the western highlands above Lake Kivu. Established in 2015, it is a small, recovering landscape and a symbol of the country’s conservation restoration efforts.

Visitor facilities here are less developed than at Volcanoes or Nyungwe, so itineraries should be arranged with an operator who knows current access arrangements. The plans below use the park as a peaceful complement to better-known stops.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

What to Expect

Gishwati-Mukura is about quiet, small-scale experiences rather than headline sightings. Visitors walk with local guides through regenerating forest, listening for birds and looking for primates such as golden monkeys. A small group of chimpanzees lives in Gishwati. Because of this, the park suits curious travellers who enjoy conservation stories more than checklists. Read the Rwanda travel guide for context on the country’s regions.

One-Day

One-Day Itinerary: A Forest Day From Rubavu

  • Morning: Drive from the Lake Kivu shore towards the forest edge and meet your guide.
  • Midday: Guided forest walk with time for birdwatching and photography.
  • Afternoon: Visit a community or restoration project, then return to the lake for sunset.

This is a gentle add-on for travellers who already base themselves on Lake Kivu.

Three-Day

Three-Day Itinerary: Lake Kivu and Gishwati

  • Day 1: Travel from Kigali to the Kivu shore and enjoy a lakeside afternoon.
  • Day 2: Forest day in Gishwati-Mukura, with a walk and a conservation talk.
  • Day 3: Boat trip or coastal walk on the lake, then return to Kigali or continue to Musanze.

A relaxed plan for those who want fresh air and cultural exchange between more intense wildlife days.

Five-Day

Five-Day Itinerary: Kivu, Gishwati and the Volcanoes

This route links the lake with the mountains, putting a quieter forest between two popular highlights.

Pacing

Pacing Advice

Allow plenty of time for the winding roads between Kigali, the lake and Musanze, and do not schedule an early gorilla trek straight after a long drive. Wear sturdy shoes, bring waterproofs and keep expectations realistic about wildlife, since the pleasure here is the setting and the story.

Seasons

Seasons and Practical Notes

The forest is wet at times, so the drier months are easier for walking. See the best time to visit Rwanda. Tariffs are set officially and may change, and your operator will confirm arrangements, guides and what your package includes.
