Arusha National Park Itineraries: Day Trip, 2 Day and 4 Day Sample Plans

Arusha National Park is ideal for a day trip, a gentle two-day stay or a four-day Mount Meru climb, offering walking safaris, lake canoeing and views of Kilimanjaro close to Arusha town.

Arusha National Park is small but varied, taking in Ngurdoto Crater, the Momella Lakes and the slopes of Mount Meru. It lies close to Arusha, so it is simple to fit in before or after the larger northern circuit parks.

Unlike many parks, it permits walking safaris and canoeing, making it a lively option for active travellers. The plans below show how to use it as an introduction or as a short break.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

Why Include Arusha National Park

Many visitors rush straight to the Serengeti and miss this gentle gem. Black-and-white colobus monkeys swing through the forest, giraffes browse in the open, and flamingos sometimes gather on the Momella Lakes. Lions are not a feature here, so it is a place for walking, birds and scenery. Read the Mount Meru and Arusha National Park guide and the Arusha safari gateway guide for background.

One-Day

One-Day Itinerary: A Day Trip From Arusha

  • Morning: Drive in from Arusha, take a game drive towards Ngurdoto Crater and look for colobus monkeys.
  • Midday: Picnic lunch near the lakes.
  • Afternoon: Short guided walk with a ranger or canoe trip on the Momella Lakes, then back to town.

This is ideal for arrival or departure days, when you want a rewarding outing without long travel.

Two-Day

Two-Day Itinerary: Walks and Canoe

  • Day 1: Afternoon game drive, a sundowner view of Kilimanjaro if skies are clear.
  • Day 2: Morning walking safari with an armed ranger, then a canoe trip before the drive back to Arusha.

Staying overnight near the park gate lets you start walks in the cool of dawn. Read more about walking safaris in East Africa.

Four-Day

Four-Day Itinerary: Mount Meru Climb

  • Day 1: Climb from the gate to the first hut, often accompanied by a ranger.
  • Day 2: Ascend to the higher hut and rest.
  • Day 3: Summit attempt in the early hours, reaching Socialist Peak by sunrise, then descend.
  • Day 4: Walk out to the gate and drive back to Arusha.

Meru reaches 4,566 metres, and many climbers use it as acclimatisation before Kilimanjaro. It is also a rewarding climb in its own right.

Pacing

Pacing Advice

Do not pack too much into the day trip; the park rewards slow walking rather than distance. If you plan a Meru climb, leave a rest day before flying onward. Check the health and vaccinations guide for altitude and medical advice.

Dry months from June to October give the clearest mountain views, while the green season brings lush scenery and fewer visitors. See the best time for Tanzania. Official fees apply, and your operator will confirm inclusions and ranger arrangements.
