Gombe Stream National Park Itineraries: 2, 4 and 7 Day Chimpanzee Plans

Gombe Stream National Park is easily visited in two to four days from Kigoma, with chimpanzee trekking, forest trails and Lake Tanganyika, or as part of a longer western Tanzania circuit.

Gombe is a small park on the shore of Lake Tanganyika, made famous by Jane Goodall’s pioneering chimpanzee research, which began there in 1960. It is reached by boat from Kigoma and has no roads, so the experience feels remote and intimate.

The park is compact but demanding, with steep forested valleys. The plans below show how to pace your stay and how to link Gombe with other western Tanzania destinations.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

Understanding Gombe

The park is small, and trekking is on foot, usually in the morning, with a guide leading you to a habituated community. Red colobus, vervet and blue monkeys, and olive baboons also live there. Read Gombe and Mahale chimpanzee trekking for background, and the Lake Tanganyika guide for the setting.

Two-Day

Two-Day Itinerary: A Quick Gombe Visit

  • Day 1: Fly to Kigoma, check in and take a boat to the park in the afternoon.
  • Day 2: Morning chimpanzee trek, swim in the lake if time allows, and return to Kigoma by boat.

Very short but efficient, this plan favours those with limited time. It is important to fly in rather than attempt long overland travel.

Four-Day

Four-Day Itinerary: Gombe and Lake Tanganyika

  • Day 1: Arrive in Kigoma and explore the lakeside town.
  • Day 2: Boat to Gombe, an afternoon walk to Kakombe waterfall.
  • Day 3: Early chimpanzee trek, followed by a swim or kayak on the lake.
  • Day 4: Return to Kigoma and fly out.

Spending a night in the park allows more than one forest outing and gives a better chance of finding chimpanzees.

Seven-Day

Seven-Day Itinerary: Gombe, Mahale and Katavi

  • Days 1 to 3: Gombe, as above.
  • Day 4: Travel by light aircraft or boat to Mahale.
  • Days 5 to 6: Chimpanzee tracking at Mahale, then lake swims.
  • Day 7: Fly out via Kigoma or on to Katavi.

This is the classic western Tanzania circuit, and it can be extended with Mahale itineraries.

Pacing

Pacing Advice

Treks involve steep, humid terrain, so a moderate level of fitness helps. Do not plan a boat transfer on the same day as an international flight. If you also plan a Uganda trip, compare experiences in chimpanzee trekking in Uganda. Pack a lightweight waterproof, insect repellent and a small daypack, because boat landings can be wet and the forest paths are often damp. Listen closely to your guide about keeping a respectful distance from the chimpanzees, which protects their health and yours.

Seasons

Seasons and Practical Notes

The drier months, roughly May to October, make trails easier and travel smoother, while the rains bring slippery paths. See the best time for Tanzania. Official fees apply, and your operator will confirm inclusions.
