Volcanoes National Park Itineraries: 2, 4 and 7 Day Gorilla Trekking Plans

Volcanoes National Park suits itineraries from two to seven days, built around gorilla trekking, golden monkey tracking, the Dian Fossey grave hike and volcano climbs in northern Rwanda.

The park protects part of the Virunga Mountains, home to mountain gorillas, golden monkeys and misty bamboo and hagenia forest. Its base town, Musanze, is about two to three hours from Kigali, and the gorilla groups are reached on foot with trackers and guides.

Permits are limited and issued by Rwanda’s authorities, so itineraries should be planned around confirmed dates. The sample plans below show how to build a trip around them.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

Choosing Your Length

A gorilla trek takes up a morning or most of a day, so one trek can fit comfortably into a two-day trip. Extra days allow activities such as golden monkey tracking, volcano hikes and visits to Musanze. Read Rwanda gorilla permits and trekking rules before booking, and see Rwanda gorilla trekking for what to expect on the mountain.

Two-Day

Two-Day Itinerary: A Quick Gorilla Trek

  • Day 1: Drive from Kigali to Musanze and prepare for the next morning.
  • Day 2: Early briefing at park headquarters, the trek and an hour with a gorilla group, then return to Kigali.

A fast option for short stays; see the 2-day gorilla trek. Some travellers manage it as a long day from the capital, as described in the 1-day gorilla trek.

Four-Day

Four-Day Itinerary: Gorillas, Monkeys and a Hike

  • Day 1: Kigali to Musanze with an afternoon in town.
  • Day 2: Gorilla trek.
  • Day 3: Golden monkey tracking in the morning or the Dian Fossey grave and Karisoke hike.
  • Day 4: Visit one of the nearby lakes, then return to Kigali.

This balanced plan gives a day of recovery between the longer activities. Read about golden monkey tracking and the things to do in Musanze.

Seven-Day

Seven-Day Itinerary: Volcanoes, Kivu and Akagera

  • Day 1: Arrive in Kigali.
  • Days 2 to 3: Musanze with a gorilla trek and a second activity.
  • Day 4: Transfer to Lake Kivu.
  • Day 5: Rest on the shore.
  • Day 6: Return towards Kigali and continue to Akagera.
  • Day 7: Morning game drive and return to Kigali for departure.

Pacing

Pacing Advice

Treks vary from short climbs to several hours of strenuous walking at altitude. Keep the day after your trek free of long drives, and do not stack a volcano hike on consecutive days unless you are fit. See gorilla trekking fitness and preparation.

Seasons

Seasons and Practical Notes

The two dry seasons are easier underfoot, but the mountains are wet and cool at any time. Read the best time to visit Rwanda. Official permit tariffs apply and your operator will confirm what is included.
