Day Trips From Kigali: Memorials, Coffee, Lakes, Akagera and Gorilla Country
Kigali sits near the middle of a small, well-connected country, so you can reach a savannah park, the volcano foothills, coffee farms and lakes on excursions that range from a half-day to a long day.
Rwanda's compact size is one of its advantages. A traveller with a spare day in Kigali can see wildlife, hills and lakes without changing hotels, and the country's good roads make longer excursions feasible.
This page lists excursions rather than the city. See the Kigali travel guide for the city and the hotels in Kigali guide for places to stay.
This guide is part of our Uganda districts and towns guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Akagera National Park
In the east, Akagera offers savannah, lakes and wetland, and it is the country's main park for classic game drives and boat trips. A long day from Kigali can include a morning drive and an afternoon on the lake, though an overnight stay gives more time. Read the Kigali to Akagera route and the Akagera National Park guide.
Rwanda is one of the easier African countries for independent-minded travellers, with good roads, a calm atmosphere and clear organisation of national parks and permits. Even so, a local driver-guide adds context and takes the stress out of navigation, particularly on the longer excursions.
Musanze and the Volcanoes
Musanze is the gateway to Volcanoes National Park, and a day from Kigali can include a golden monkey trek, a cultural visit or, on a tight schedule, a gorilla trek with an early start. See the one-day gorilla trek from Kigali guide and golden monkey tracking guide. Permits must be booked in advance.
Memorials and Museums
Kigali has memorials and museums that explain Rwanda's recent history, and they are visited with respect and quiet. Allow time and plan something calm afterwards. See the Kigali memorial sites guide and the Rwanda museums and heritage sites guide.
A memorial visit is best placed early in the day, with nothing demanding scheduled immediately afterwards. Many visitors prefer to follow it with a quiet walk or a meal, and to keep conversation respectful. Photography rules vary, so follow signs and ask staff.
Coffee and Tea
Rwanda is known for coffee and tea, and tours take you to washing stations or plantations to see harvesting and processing. These work well as half-day trips. See the Rwanda coffee and tea tours guide.
Huye and the South
Huye, formerly Butare, has museums and a university town feel and can be reached by road as a long day; see the Kigali to Huye route and the Huye and Butare guide. It suits those interested in culture and heritage.
Lakes in the West and North
Lake Kivu's shore towns, such as Kibuye and Rubavu, are further, and are best treated as overnight stays; see the Kigali to Kibuye route and Kigali to Rubavu route. The twin lakes near Musanze are a scenic option; see Burera and Ruhondo guide.
Distances in Rwanda look short on a map, but hill roads and slow vehicles make journeys longer than expected. As a rule, treat anything beyond Musanze, Huye or Akagera as an overnight trip rather than a day trip, and avoid travelling after dark where you can.
Arranging Your Day
Book a driver-guide through your hotel or operator, set out early and carry water, a rain jacket and sun protection. Rwanda has rules on plastic bags and Umuganda, the monthly community work morning, which may affect travel times on the last Saturday of the month; see the Rwanda culture and etiquette guide. Use Kigali urban birding for a short early-morning outing.
Even short trips benefit from a flexible mind. Weather in the hills can change quickly, so pack a rain jacket, and ask your driver about road conditions before committing to a long day. Seasonal differences matter; see the Rwanda best time guide.
