Where to Stay at Kibuye and Lake Kivu: Lakeshore Hotels, Islands and Guesthouses

Kibuye, also called Karongi, is a peaceful lakeside town on Lake Kivu where visitors stay in lakeshore hotels and guesthouses, relax on the water and break the journey between the gorillas in the north and Nyungwe in the south.

Lake Kivu runs along Rwanda's western border, and Kibuye sits midway along its shore, among green hills, small bays and islands. It is a place to slow down after the intensity of trekking.

The main choices are which part of the shore to stay on and what level of comfort you want. This guide describes those options without naming specific properties.

This guide is part of our where to stay in Uganda guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

How the Area Is Laid Out

Kibuye is a small town on a peninsula and a series of coves on the eastern shore of the lake. Hotels and guesthouses are strung along the lakefront and the lanes behind it, with views across the water to hills and islands. The lakeshore road continues north to Rubavu and south towards Rusizi and Nyungwe, passing coffee-growing areas and villages. Boat trips from the harbour reach nearby islands. See Lake Kivu for an overview of the whole lake.

Who

Who Each Option Suits

Couples and honeymooners often enjoy a lakeshore hotel with a sunset terrace, and families like gardens and easy access to the water. Active travellers can use the lake for kayaking and boat trips, and coffee enthusiasts can visit local washing stations. Independent travellers may prefer a guesthouse, where hosts offer local tips. Anyone arriving after a long drive will appreciate a relaxed first evening. See Rwanda coffee and tea tours for ideas to enjoy around the lake.

Location

Location Trade-offs

A room directly on the shore offers wake-up views and quick access to the water, but may be steeper to reach or farther from the town centre. A property in town is closer to shops and restaurants but may have less privacy. Peninsula or island-facing places can be quieter, with limited dining options. Swimming conditions and water quality vary, so ask your host for advice, as local conditions and rules can differ. Remember that the lake is a place to relax, not a wildlife destination.

What

What to Ask When Booking

Ask how long the transfer from your previous stop will take, since the roads are hilly and winding. Check whether a lake view is guaranteed and how far the room is from the water. Ask about boat trips, kayaks and swimming safety, and whether the property can arrange visits to a coffee washing station. Find out about meals, Wi-Fi and power reliability. If you are travelling with children or older guests, ask about steps and slopes on the property. Confirm check-in times if arriving late.

Seasons

Seasons and Availability

The lake is pleasant year-round, with warm days and cool evenings. Rainy seasons bring cloud and showers, although the green hills are striking. The drier months in the middle and at the start of the year are popular, especially for weekends and holidays. Rooms with the best views are limited, so book early. Combining

Combining Kibuye With Other Stops

Kibuye fits between Musanze and the volcanoes and Nyungwe, and the scenic road along the lake is part of the appeal. It also pairs with Gishwati-Mukura to the north. Read Kigali to Nyungwe route for the wider journey and Rwanda safari itineraries for ways to add a lake stay.
