Rwanda Safari Packages Guide: Gorillas, Nyungwe, Akagera and Kigali
Rwanda packages typically link Kigali, Volcanoes National Park for gorillas, Lake Kivu, Nyungwe Forest and Akagera, and are easy to arrange because distances are short.
Rwanda is compact, safe and well organised, which makes it a favourite for first trips to Africa. Roads are good, and most parks are within a day's drive of Kigali.
Gorilla permits are regulated by the Rwanda Development Board. This page does not publish tariffs; ask your operator for the current official permit price.

Check whether permits are bundled or purchased separately, and confirm guiding fees, porter hire and tips. See what Rwanda gorilla trekking includes.
Typical Itineraries
A three-day trip covers a Kigali stopover and gorilla trek. Five days add Lake Kivu or golden monkeys. Eight to ten days include Nyungwe's chimps and canopy walk, and Akagera's savannah. See Rwanda 5-day and 10-day itineraries.
Gorilla Trekking Basics
Treks start early, last from two to six hours depending on where the group is, and finish with up to an hour with the gorillas. Fitness requirements are moderate. The minimum age is 15. See Rwanda gorilla trekking.
Extending Your Trip
Many travellers add Uganda or Tanzania. See Rwanda and Tanzania and East Africa combinations.
Seasons and Pacing
Rwanda's dry seasons, roughly June to September and December to February, make trails and roads easier. The wetter months bring lush forests and fewer visitors. Pace your trip so that trekking days are followed by rest. Rwanda's small size means you can see a lot in a week without long transfers, but do not rush. See best time to visit East Africa.
Add-On Experiences
Consider visiting memorial sites in Kigali, tea plantations, Lake Kivu's boat trips, cultural villages and craft markets. Respectful visits to memorials help you understand the country's history and resilience. See Kigali memorial sites and Kigali travel guide.
Cultural and Community Visits
Rwanda's cultural offerings include Intore dance performances, craft cooperatives, coffee and tea tours and village walks near Volcanoes National Park. These visits give income directly to families and show everyday life beyond the parks. Ask your operator to arrange them with community groups, keep photographs respectful and buy crafts at fair prices. A morning with local farmers or a drumming lesson makes a pleasing counterpoint to a day of trekking, and it lets you thank the communities that live alongside the gorillas and protect their forests.
Keeping It Flexible
Weather and permit allocations can shift plans. Ask your operator how changes are handled and keep a buffer day. Pack for rain and sun. A flexible attitude turns small surprises into good stories, and Rwanda's warm hospitality helps smooth any bumps.
Choosing an Operator
Ask about experience, guides and transparency. See how to choose a gorilla trekking company in Rwanda.
