Rwanda Gorilla Trekking Cost: What the Permit Covers and What a Trip Includes

The cost of gorilla trekking in Rwanda has two parts: the gorilla permit, set by the Rwanda Development Board, and the trip around it, which covers transport, accommodation, meals and guiding.

Rwanda has built its gorilla tourism around high-value, low-volume visits. The permit is priced higher than in other gorilla countries, and the money supports park management, anti-poaching work and local communities. A share of park revenue goes to development projects around the park, which is why people near Volcanoes National Park often speak well of gorilla tourism.

Prices are set and revised by the Rwanda Development Board, so this page does not quote figures. Instead it explains what each part of the cost buys, what extras to plan for and how to compare quotes fairly. Always confirm the current permit rate with the official tariff or your operator before you commit.

Overview

What the Gorilla Permit Covers

The permit gives you entry to Volcanoes National Park for the trek and the one-hour visit with a habituated gorilla family, together with the services of park guides and trackers. It does not include transport to the park, accommodation, meals, a porter or your tips. Permits are limited every day, so the permit is the first thing to secure. Why

Why Rwanda Costs More Than Uganda

The strategy behind the price is to limit visitors and fund conservation. Uganda offers more gorilla families and a lower permit rate, with a wider range of budget lodges. Rwanda's advantage is speed: Kigali is a few hours from the park, so a short trip uses fewer days of accommodation and transport. Read Rwanda vs Uganda gorilla trekking and Uganda gorilla permits.

How

How to Compare Quotes and Save Sensibly

Compare like with like: same number of nights, lodge level, transport and permit. Travelling in the rainy months can lower accommodation rates, and booking early secures permits. Do not choose a quote that cannot show the permit, because unreserved permits can sell out. See Rwanda gorilla trekking guide, Rwanda itineraries and how to book a safari.
