Kenya vs Tanzania Safari: Choosing Between East Africa's Two Great Safari Countries
Kenya and Tanzania share the same wildlife and the same migration, and the real differences lie in park layout, travel style, scenery and logistics, so the better choice depends on how long you have and what you want to see.
Both countries offer outstanding safaris with lions, elephants, leopards and plains game, plus coastlines for a beach finish. Kenya tends to be compact and well connected, with conservancies and a strong lodge culture, while Tanzania has larger parks and distinct circuits.
Neither is better in every way. This page sets out the differences evenly. See the Kenya travel guide and the Tanzania travel guide for more.

Many travellers ask which country is better and receive conflicting advice. The honest answer is that they are different rather than better or worse, and that the best trip depends on your calendar, your appetite for travel days and the kind of safari atmosphere you prefer.
Wildlife
Both host the Big Five and migration herds; see the Big Five and Big Seven guide and the Great Migration guide. Kenya's Samburu has dry-country species; see the Special Five.
The Great Migration crosses between the two countries, and the best place to see it depends on the month. Kenya's Mara hosts herds in the middle of the year, while the Serengeti sees them at other times of the year. Neither is guaranteed, and timing varies from year to year.
Landscapes and Parks
Kenya includes savannah, Rift Valley lakes and highland forest; see the Rift Valley lakes itinerary. Tanzania has the Serengeti plains, the Ngorongoro crater and southern wilderness; see northern vs southern circuit.
Tanzania's northern circuit links Tarangire, Manyara, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti in a loop that is easy to organise. Its southern and western parks are more remote and suit repeat visitors. Kenya's parks are scattered around Nairobi, with the Rift Valley, Mount Kenya and the north all adding variety.
Seasons
Dry periods are generally best for wildlife in both. See Kenya best time and Tanzania best time.
Think too about where you want to end your trip. Kenya offers Diani, Lamu and Watamu on its coast, while Tanzania offers Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia. All provide a warm, relaxed finish after the dust of the bush.
Access and Logistics
Kenya's main parks are mostly a short flight or road from Nairobi; see Kenya flights. Tanzania often involves small aircraft between parks; see Tanzania flights.
Who Each Suits
Kenya suits first-timers and shorter trips; Tanzania suits longer stays and repeat visitors. Compare packages in Kenya packages and Tanzania packages.
Planning early is important in the peak months, when the best camps are booked well ahead. A good operator will match your dates, interests and group to the right areas, and will tell you honestly when a request is unrealistic.
Combining Both
A combined trip uses the migration and varied scenery; see the Kenya and Tanzania combination guide.
