Kenya Rift Valley Lakes Itinerary: Naivasha, Nakuru, Elmenteita and Baringo
The Rift Valley lakes offer birds, rhinos, hippos, hot springs and dramatic escarpments within a few hours of Nairobi, making them ideal for a short trip or a relaxed addition to a longer safari.
A chain of lakes runs through the floor of the Great Rift Valley, each with its own character. Naivasha is fresh and busy with boats and hippos, Nakuru is alkaline and protected as a park, Elmenteita is quiet and scenic, and Baringo and Bogoria lie further north, hotter and wilder.
The plans below show how to combine them for three, four or six days, with advice on seasons and activities.
This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Three-Day Itinerary
Day 1: leave Nairobi, descend into the Rift Valley with views from the escarpment, and reach Lake Naivasha for a boat ride and a walk on a lakeshore estate. Day 2: morning at Hell's Gate National Park, where cycling and walking among cliffs and plains are allowed, then drive to Lake Nakuru for an afternoon game drive. Day 3: dawn drive for rhinos and birds, then return to Nairobi. This short loop is suited to a long weekend and can be done by road without flights. See Naivasha and Hell's Gate itineraries.
Four-Day Itinerary
Spend two nights at Naivasha or Elmenteita and two at Nakuru. The extra night lets you do a full day at Nakuru, including time at viewpoints above the lake and drives through woodland and grassland, and a gentler pace at the first lake. Consider a visit to a conservancy at Elmenteita for walking and views. See Lake Nakuru itineraries for further ideas on structuring your days there.
Six-Day Itinerary
Extend the loop north to Bogoria and Baringo. After Nakuru, travel by road to Lake Bogoria for hot springs and, when conditions allow, flamingos, then continue to Lake Baringo for a boat trip among hippos and fish eagles and an early birdwalk. Roads become rougher and the climate hotter, so allow longer travel times and carry sun protection. Read the Bogoria and Baringo guide before deciding if this extension suits you.
Wildlife and Birds
Rhinos at Nakuru are a highlight, along with buffalo, Rothschild's giraffe and a wide range of birds. Flamingo numbers shift with water levels and algae, so do not count on a pink shoreline, and enjoy the pelicans, fish eagles and waders instead. Hippos are best seen on Naivasha and Baringo boat trips. Take binoculars, and read the Lake Nakuru wildlife guide for species detail.
Seasons and Practicalities
The lakes are workable all year. The dry months bring clearer roads and warmer days, while the rains turn the escarpment green and benefit birdlife, though some tracks become muddy. Nights at altitude can be cool. A private vehicle is the easiest way to link the lakes, and some travellers hire bicycles at Hell's Gate. See best time to visit Kenya for broader seasonal advice.
Adding the Mara
The Rift Valley lakes work well as a first or last stage of a Masai Mara safari, breaking the journey and adding variety. See the Nairobi to Masai Mara guide for linking options.
Activities Beyond Game Drives
The lakes suit active travellers as well as wildlife watchers. At Hell's Gate you can cycle or walk between cliffs and grassland, and boats on Naivasha and Baringo give close views of hippos and birds. Escarpment viewpoints reward a short walk, and some lakeshore estates offer horse riding or guided nature walks. Birders should plan early starts because activity is highest in the cool morning hours. Ask your lodge which activities are included and which need to be booked in advance, so that you can fit them around transfers.
