Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate Itineraries: Day Trip, 2 Night and 4 Day Plans

Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate fit neatly into a long day trip from Nairobi, a two-night Rift Valley break or a four-day route that continues to Lake Nakuru and the Masai Mara.

Naivasha is the closest Rift Valley lake to Nairobi and combines a freshwater lake with a national park where visitors can cycle and walk among wildlife. Few Kenyan destinations allow such active exploration so easily.

These sample plans show how to enjoy the lake and the gorge with enough time, and how to weave them into longer Kenya routes.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

How to Use Naivasha

The lake is known for boat trips among hippos and birdlife, while Hell's Gate offers cliffs, gorges and open grassland where zebras, giraffes and buffalo graze. Because walking and cycling are allowed in much of the park, it feels very different from a standard game drive. Read the full overview in the Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate guide.

Pacing

Pacing, Safety and Comfort

Cycling and walking are enjoyable but can be hot, so start early, carry water and wear sun protection. Wildlife is not fenced from you in Hell's Gate, so follow rangers' advice and keep a respectful distance from animals. The lake can be breezy, so bring a light jacket for boat trips. Our cycling and bike safaris guide explains what to expect on two wheels.

Planning Notes

Naivasha is a good first stop for travellers recovering from a long flight, because it is close to Nairobi and relaxed. For timing and wider routes, see the best time to visit Kenya and the Kenya travel guide.
