Masai Mara Itineraries: 3, 5 and 7 Day Sample Safaris

A three-day trip gives a first taste of the Masai Mara, five days add a Rift Valley lake or a balloon flight, and seven days allow a broader circuit that includes Amboseli.

The Masai Mara rewards time. Even a short visit delivers big cats and plains game, but a longer stay lets you explore different sectors, follow the seasons and avoid rushing between travel and viewing.

These sample itineraries show how to structure a Mara safari of different lengths. Timings assume travel from Nairobi, by road or air.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

At a glance

  • Short safari: 3 days
  • Mid-length: 5 days
  • Wider circuit: 7 days
  • Minimum stay: Two nights in the reserve
  • Best for crossings: Late July to October
Overview

How Long to Stay

Two nights is the practical minimum because a road journey eats much of one day. Three nights allow two full days of drives, which is long enough to follow up leads on big cats and to try a full-day excursion. If you are visiting during the migration, add an extra night to improve your chances of a river crossing. See the migration calendar.

Pacing

Pacing and Transport Choices

Flying saves hours and reduces fatigue, particularly on short trips, while road travel offers scenery and a gentler budget. Many travellers combine the two. Avoid back-to-back long road days and keep one full day free for flexible viewing. See the Nairobi to Masai Mara road and flight guide.

Season

Season and Planning Advice

The migration months are the busiest, so book early and choose camps in the right sector. In the green months the reserve is quieter and lush, with resident wildlife still excellent. See the best time to visit the Masai Mara and the Masai Mara guide.
