Amboseli Itineraries: 3, 5 and 7 Day Safari Plans With Kilimanjaro Views

Amboseli works as a compact three-day trip from Nairobi, a five-day journey with Tsavo, or a seven-day Kenya circuit that adds the Masai Mara or the coast.

Amboseli lies a few hours south of Nairobi beneath Kilimanjaro, and its open landscape and elephant herds make it a favourite first safari. Because the park is relatively small, you can see a lot in two nights.

The plans below show different ways to structure your time. Distances are modest, but good pacing still matters, especially if you want to catch the mountain at dawn.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

Planning Principles

Plan two nights in Amboseli at minimum so that you have one full day with a dawn drive, a midday rest and an afternoon drive. Dawn is the best chance of a clear Kilimanjaro view, and the swamps draw elephants and other animals throughout the day. Longer itineraries benefit from pairing Amboseli with a contrasting park. See the Amboseli National Park guide and the Amboseli wildlife guide.

Three-Day

Three-Day Amboseli Safari

  • Day 1. Drive from Nairobi via Namanga or Emali, arriving for lunch and an afternoon game drive around the swamps.
  • Day 2. Dawn drive for mountain views and elephants, a rest in the heat of the day, then an afternoon drive or a visit to the viewpoint at Observation Hill.
  • Day 3. Early morning drive, breakfast and return to Nairobi in the afternoon.
Five-Day

Five-Day Amboseli and Tsavo

  • Day 1. Nairobi to Amboseli with an afternoon game drive.
  • Day 2. Full day in Amboseli, with a dawn and afternoon drive.
  • Day 3. Travel to Tsavo, with game viewing on the way. See Tsavo East and Tsavo West.
  • Day 4. Full day in Tsavo, exploring its wider landscapes and the red elephants.
  • Day 5. Return to Nairobi, or continue to the coast if time allows.
Seven-Day

Seven-Day Amboseli, Mara and Rift Valley Circuit

  • Day 1. Nairobi to Amboseli.
  • Day 2. Full day in Amboseli.
  • Day 3. Return to Nairobi for a rest and city time, or fly onward. See things to do in Nairobi.
  • Day 4. Travel to the Masai Mara by road or air.
  • Day 5. Full-day game drives in the Mara.
  • Day 6. Second Mara day, perhaps with a balloon flight. See balloon safari in the Masai Mara.
  • Day 7. Fly or drive back to Nairobi.
Pacing

Pacing and Season Advice

The road from Nairobi is long enough that a very early start brings real benefits. If you can, avoid back-to-back full travel days and add a rest afternoon in the middle of longer routes. The dry months are best for views and concentrations of elephants, while the green months are quieter. See the best time to visit Amboseli and how to get to Amboseli.

Adding

Adding Tanzania or the Coast

Amboseli lies close to the Tanzania border and can be the start of a cross-border journey, while Tsavo links naturally with the beaches. See Kenya safari packages and East Africa safari combinations.
