Lake Nakuru Itineraries: Day Trip, 2 Day and 4 Day Sample Plans

Lake Nakuru National Park is small enough to see in a day, and it fits well into two-day Rift Valley breaks or four-day routes that continue to Lake Naivasha and the Masai Mara.

This compact park is known for its soda lake, rhinos, Rothschild's giraffes and rich birdlife. Because distances are short, you can cover the highlights quickly and spend the rest of your time on the road or at other Rift Valley stops.

The plans below show how to include the park in trips of different lengths.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

What Shapes the Plan

The park's key viewing is split between lakeshore, woodland and grassland, with famous lookouts such as Baboon Cliff. A single game drive can cover the main sites, while a second drive adds quieter corners. Flamingo numbers vary with water levels, so do not build a trip around them alone; rhinos, giraffes and a long bird list make the park rewarding regardless. See the Lake Nakuru National Park guide.

Day

Day Trip From Nairobi

  • Early start. Leave Nairobi before dawn if possible and travel through the Rift Valley.
  • Morning. Enter the park and drive the lakeshore road, then climb to a viewpoint such as Baboon Cliff.
  • Midday. Picnic lunch in a designated area.
  • Afternoon. Search for rhinos and giraffes in the woodland and grassland before returning to Nairobi in the evening.
Two-Day

Two-Day Nakuru and Naivasha

  • Day 1. Drive to Lake Nakuru, with a full afternoon game drive and an overnight stay near the park.
  • Day 2. Morning drive for birds and animals, then travel to Lake Naivasha for a boat trip or a walk in Hell's Gate. See Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate itineraries.
  • Evening. Return to Nairobi or stay overnight at the lake.
Four-Day

Four-Day Nakuru and Masai Mara Safari

  • Day 1. Nairobi to Lake Nakuru with an afternoon drive.
  • Day 2. Morning drive, then travel to the Masai Mara via the Rift Valley and Narok.
  • Day 3. Full day of game drives in the Mara. See Masai Mara itineraries.
  • Day 4. Morning drive and return to Nairobi by road or air.
Pacing

Pacing, Season and Practical Points

The park suits any season because lakeside viewing is rewarding year-round. Dry months make for easier driving, while wetter months are quieter and greener. A Nakuru stop breaks up the road to the Mara and spreads out the driving. Pack binoculars and layers, and read the best time to visit Kenya.

Linking

Linking With Other Kenya Trips

Lake Nakuru fits neatly before the Mara or after Mount Kenya, and it makes a good gentle introduction for families. For ideas, see Kenya safari itineraries and Kenya safari packages.
