How to Get to Amboseli: Road From Nairobi, Flights and the Namanga Route

Amboseli is about four to five hours by road from Nairobi, or a short scheduled flight to the park's airstrip.

Located at the foot of Kilimanjaro near the Tanzania border, Amboseli is easy to include in short Kenya itineraries. Roads are mostly paved to the final approach.

Plan your route according to the other parks you will visit.

Overview

By Road

Safari vehicles leave Nairobi, pass Kajiado and reach the park via Namanga or Emali. Dust and trucks can slow the way. Start early to arrive for the afternoon drive.

By

By Air

Scheduled flights serve Amboseli airstrip from Nairobi, and some connect with the Mara or Tsavo. Baggage limits apply. See flying safaris.

Combining

Combining Amboseli With Other Parks

Common routes link Amboseli with Tsavo and the coast or with the Masai Mara. See Tsavo parks and Nairobi to the Mara.

Crossing

Crossing to Tanzania

Namanga is a border post to Arusha. See visa guide.

Sample

Sample Itineraries

A three-day trip might drive from Nairobi to Amboseli, spend two full days on game drives and return on day three. A longer plan can link Amboseli with Tsavo West, the Taita Hills and the coast, or with the Masai Mara via Nairobi. Fly-in options exist for those short of time. Match transport to your energy and comfort.

Roads

Roads and Conditions

Main roads are generally good, but the approach to the park can be dusty and rough. Safari vehicles manage easily. Drive slowly near villages and livestock. After rain, some tracks are slippery. Your driver-guide knows the best routes.

Before

Before You Go

Confirm pick-up times, carry water and snacks and keep your passport accessible. Pack layers, a hat and sunscreen. See packing list and visa guide.

Staying

Staying Near the Park

Lodges inside the park offer immediate access, while those on the borders lower costs and sometimes offer cultural activities. Ask about gate times, because park rules restrict driving before dawn and after dusk. Plan your arrival so you can settle in before the first drive.

Border

Border Crossings and Combinations

Amboseli sits close to the border with Tanzania and to the foothills of Kilimanjaro, so it combines well with other parks. Many itineraries pair it with Tsavo West or Tsavo East by road, or with the Masai Mara by flight. Some travellers cross into Tanzania, which requires a transfer arranged in advance with correct documentation and visas. Because rules and schedules change, discuss border logistics early with your operator. Road conditions vary with the season, so allow extra time in the rains. Combining parks gives a richer trip and spreads the cost of getting there across more days of safari.
