Big Five and Big Seven in East Africa: Where to See Them

The Big Five are lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino, and East Africa offers good chances to see them in Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda's Akagera, with rhinos in Uganda's sanctuary.

The term began with hunters but now describes the most sought-after animals for photographers. Seeing all five takes planning, because rhinos and leopards are the hardest.

The Big Seven adds whales and great white sharks, found off South Africa.

Spotting

Spotting Tips

Ask your guide to prioritise habitat that suits each animal. Leopards rest in trees and thickets and are most active at dusk and dawn. Lions often lie in shade during the heat of the day. Rhinos are heavily protected and sometimes viewed only from set distances. Buffalo and elephants are often seen in large groups. Patience and a good guide matter more than the number of days.

Beyond

Beyond the Big Five

Many visitors find that the less famous animals leave the strongest impressions: cheetahs, giraffes, hippos, wild dogs and the primates of Uganda and Rwanda. Do not judge a safari only by a checklist. See East Africa primates and African wild dogs for animals worth adding to your wish list.

History

History of the Term

The phrase came from big-game hunters who regarded the five animals as the most dangerous to hunt on foot. Today it is a wildlife-watching shorthand, and conservation groups use it to promote protection of species and habitats.

Planning

Planning a Big Five Safari

Kenya and Tanzania offer the strongest chance of the full set in one trip, particularly if you visit the Mara, Ngorongoro and a rhino-rich conservancy. Akagera in Rwanda has all five after reintroductions. Allow at least seven days, travel in the dry season and hire a guide with a strong reputation. Be realistic: wildlife is unpredictable, and the journey is as valuable as the checklist.

Other

Other Famous Groups

Wildlife enthusiasts also talk about the Ugly Five, the Small Five and the Shy Five. These lists encourage visitors to notice animals beyond the famous predators and herbivores. Ask your guide to share the stories behind each name.
