Things to Do in Nyungwe National Park: Chimpanzee Tracking, Canopy Walk, Waterfall Hikes and Birding

Nyungwe offers chimpanzee tracking, a canopy walkway above the forest, waterfall and ridge hikes, colobus monkey treks, birding and visits to tea estates on the park's edge.

Whereas gorilla trekking dominates the north of Rwanda, Nyungwe is a place for varied forest walks. Activities are graded, so you can choose long hikes or short strolls.

These suggestions help you design two or three days that mix primates, scenery and community experiences.

This guide is part of our Uganda park trails and activities guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

Chimpanzee Tracking

A chimpanzee trek starts in the early morning and follows trackers into the forest. Steep slopes and mud are common, and the hour with the chimps is a lively one. It is often the first activity visitors book. Compare it with other destinations in Nyungwe versus Kibale and the 3-day Nyungwe chimpanzee tour.

The

The Canopy Walkway

A suspended walkway holds you above the forest floor, giving a view of treetops, birds and sometimes monkeys. It is not a long hike, but it needs a head for heights. Morning light and clear weather give the best views. Find out about booking and the approach in the canopy walk and forest trails.

Waterfall

Waterfall and Ridge Hikes

Trails lead to waterfalls, swamp edges and viewpoints, from short two-hour walks to long all-day hikes. Guided walks reveal orchids, tree ferns, butterflies and birds, and the longer routes are rewarding if you are fit. Waterproofs and boots are vital.

Colobus

Colobus Treks and Birding

Dedicated treks follow colobus monkey troops through the canopy, and birders can search for Albertine Rift endemics with an expert. See the East Africa birding guide and the Nyungwe wildlife guide for species and seasons.

Planning

Planning Your Days

The best schedule puts the chimpanzee trek on your first morning, when you are fresh, and keeps the canopy walk or a waterfall hike for the following day. Afternoons suit lodge time, tea estate visits or short birding walks near the forest edge. Rain can arrive at any hour, so keep a waterproof layer within reach and protect cameras. A local guide makes a large difference in a forest where animals are heard before they are seen, so ask your operator to arrange a specialist if birds or plants are your priority. See photography safaris for tips on shooting in low forest light.

Tea

Tea Estates and Communities

The forest edge is lined with tea plantations, where visitors can tour a factory, walk among the bushes and learn about local life. See Rwanda coffee and tea tours for similar experiences. Choose community-run options and respect local customs.
