Things to Do in Meru National Park: Game Drives, Rhino Sanctuary, Elsa’s Grave and Birding

Meru activities include game drives along rivers and plains, visits to the rhino sanctuary, sites linked to Elsa the lioness, birding and, with some lodges, guided walks.

Meru is a place to slow down. With few vehicles and varied terrain, a morning drive can include rivers, palm groves, open plains and rocky hills within a short distance.

The suggestions below help you shape a stay of two to four nights.

This guide is part of our Uganda park trails and activities guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

Game Drives

Morning drives catch lions and cheetahs active in cool air, while afternoon drives are good for elephants and buffalo at the water. Ask your guide to explore different areas on each outing, because the park’s habitats change from plains to riverine forest quickly. See game drives explained for how a typical day works.

The

The Rhino Sanctuary

A visit to the guarded sanctuary is a highlight, allowing you to see rhinos under the watch of rangers and to learn about the monitoring that keeps them safe. Follow the ranger’s instructions closely, stay quiet and keep a safe distance. Read the black rhino conservation page to understand the wider picture.

Elsa

Elsa and the Born Free Story

Meru is where Joy and George Adamson released Elsa the lioness back into the wild, a story told in the book and film Born Free. Visitors can see places connected to Elsa and the Adamsons, including Elsa’s resting place, and learn how the story shaped attitudes to wildlife. Compare it with lion biology in what do lions eat and Scar the lion in real life.

Birding

Birding and Rivers

The rivers and swamps are good for kingfishers, herons, storks and raptors, while the thornbush holds hornbills, shrikes and guineafowl. Picnic stops by the water let you watch both birds and animals at leisure. The East Africa birding guide has more ideas.

Walks

Walks, Night Drives and Evenings

Some lodges and conservancy areas arrange guided walks and night drives, subject to park rules, which reveal small details and nocturnal animals. Check what is permitted when booking. See night drives and walking safaris.

Planning

Planning Your Stay

Two to three nights is usually enough to see the main areas. Pair Meru with the mountain and Laikipia in a single circuit, using getting to Meru and things to do at Mount Kenya as planning aids.

Responsible

Responsible Visiting and Community Links

Tourism supports the rangers, the rhino sanctuary and the communities living around the park, so choosing lodges and guides that employ local people makes a difference. Respect rules on speed, off-road driving and distance from animals, and take all litter with you. Villages and markets in the surrounding highlands, including the busy town of Meru itself, give a flavour of everyday life if you have time before or after your stay. For wider principles, see the responsible and conservation travel guide, and for the people of the region, see East Africa culture and people.
