How to Get to Meru National Park: Road From Nairobi, Flights and Northern Circuits
Meru National Park is most of a day by road from Nairobi via Nanyuki and Meru town, or a short flight to an airstrip serving lodges in or near the park.
Meru lies north-east of Mount Kenya, away from the main safari circuit, which is part of its appeal. The drive passes farmland, forest edges and highland towns before dropping into warmer, drier country near the park.
Because of the distance, many travellers fly one way or build Meru into a longer circuit rather than making a quick round trip from Nairobi.
This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Driving From Nairobi
The main road runs north through the central highlands, passing Thika, Nyeri and Nanyuki before reaching Meru town, from where a smaller road leads to a park gate. Much of the route is paved, with a rougher final stretch. Because the journey is long, many travellers overnight near Mount Kenya or at a Laikipia conservancy and arrive in Meru the following day. The getting to Mount Kenya page describes the first half of this route.
Flying to Meru
Scheduled and charter flights connect Nairobi’s Wilson Airport and other airstrips with landing strips serving camps and lodges in and around the park. Flying turns a full-day drive into a short hop and allows time for an afternoon game drive on arrival. Baggage limits are strict, so pack in soft bags. The flying safaris guide explains the process.
A Northern Kenya Loop
A rewarding circuit links Nairobi, Mount Kenya or Laikipia, Meru and Samburu before returning to Nairobi or flying to the Masai Mara. The drive between Meru and Samburu takes you through changing landscapes and small towns. See Samburu National Reserve and the special five and Laikipia and Ol Pejeta Conservancy.
Self-Drive and Road Conditions
Self-drivers should use a high-clearance vehicle, check the road conditions locally and avoid driving after dark. Fuel and supplies should be bought in Meru town or Nanyuki before heading into the park. See the self-drive safari guide.
Practical Tips
Carry water, snacks and sun protection, and keep your passport and park documents handy. For border formalities and money, see Kenya entry, money and practical information, and for onward movement see getting around East Africa.
What to Expect on Arrival
Meru rewards the extra effort of getting there. On arrival you are likely to find a quiet park with a handful of other vehicles, tracks that wind between palm-fringed rivers and open grassland, and lodges that feel remote and personal. Check in, rest and head out for an afternoon drive rather than trying to cover everything on the first day. Your guide will brief you on rules and on safe behaviour around elephants and buffalo, and will explain which areas are best at different times of day. A flexible plan, with at least two nights in the park, makes the long journey worthwhile.
