Rwanda in April: Rain, Remembrance and a Green, Quiet Gorilla Season
April is the heart of Rwanda's main rainy season, with misty green hills, muddy trails, few visitors and gorilla trekking that remains possible and rewarding for prepared travellers, alongside the national period of remembrance that begins on 7 April.
Rwanda's altitude keeps temperatures mild, so April is cool and damp rather than hot and sticky. Rain often falls in the afternoon or overnight, and mornings can be clear enough for excellent treks.
This guide explains what April is like for gorillas, forests, Kigali and the savannah, and how to travel respectfully during a significant national moment.
This guide is part of our Uganda month-by-month and seasonal guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Weather in the Hills
April sits in the main rainy season, which runs roughly from March to May. Volcanoes National Park is high, so it is cool, cloudy and often wet, with mist wrapping the Virunga volcanoes and afternoon showers common. Rain does not stop trekking, but it changes it: paths are slippery, vegetation is soaked and views of the volcanic peaks come and go. Many mornings begin dry, so a good plan is to keep your trek day flexible and carry rain gear in your daypack. For the seasonal context, see the best time to visit Rwanda and the Volcanoes National Park best-time guide.
Gorilla Trekking in the Rain
Gorilla families move less far when food is plentiful, so some treks can be shorter in the wet months, though this is never guaranteed. The forest is lush, and gorillas feed on abundant vegetation. You will be wet and muddy, so waterproof jacket and trousers, gaiters, gloves and sturdy boots matter. Wrap cameras and phones in waterproof bags. Fitness helps even on shorter treks; read gorilla trekking fitness and preparation. Permits are usually easier to obtain in April than in the dry months, but check the permit and trekking rules and book through your operator.
A Time of Remembrance
On 7 April, Rwanda begins Kwibuka, the annual period of remembrance of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, which continues for many days. Public life is observed with sensitivity, events and commemorations take place across the country, and some venues or entertainment may change hours or be subdued. Visitors are welcome, but should be respectful, dress modestly, avoid loud behaviour and follow local guidance. The Kigali Genocide Memorial and other memorial sites guide explains how to visit thoughtfully, and culture and etiquette gives broader context. Confirm arrangements with your operator before travelling.
Nyungwe, Akagera and Lake Kivu
Nyungwe is wet at any time of year, and in April forest trails and canopy walks can be slippery but vibrant with birds and primates; see Nyungwe best time to visit. Akagera is green, with lakes brimming and grass tall, which can make animals harder to see but landscapes beautiful; compare with Akagera best time. Lake Kivu is a calm retreat for rest days, though views can be hazy.Kigali and Practicalities
Kigali is mild and humid, with showers that clear quickly. Roads are mostly well-maintained, but landslides in hilly areas can occasionally delay journeys, so allow flexibility. April is low season for many lodges, so there is often more choice and sometimes better value. Pack as shown in the packing list, adding strong waterproofs and spare socks. See the Rwanda travel guide for entry and practical notes.
Who April Suits
April suits travellers who accept mud and mist in exchange for lush forests, fewer people and calm roads, and who want to travel thoughtfully during the commemoration period. If you want clear volcano views and dry trails, consider Rwanda in August. If you are combining countries, compare Uganda in April and read the Uganda and Rwanda combination.
