Kigali to Gishwati-Mukura: Route, Stops and Practical Tips

Gishwati-Mukura is reached by road from Kigali through the green hills of western Rwanda, and the journey is best treated as a full travelling day with a base on the Lake Kivu side.

The park protects remnant forests in the highlands above Lake Kivu, far quieter than the volcano and chimpanzee parks. There is no airstrip for visitors, so everyone arrives by road, and the final approach uses smaller, hillier tracks.

This guide describes how to organise the journey, where to break it and how to link the forest with Volcanoes National Park or Lake Kivu.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

Choosing Your Approach

There are two sensible ways to reach the forest. The first heads north to Musanze and then west towards Rubavu, using the main paved roads before turning onto smaller tracks. The second runs west through the hills towards Lake Kivu and approaches from the Kibuye side. Both are scenic, and the better choice depends on the other places in your itinerary. Your operator will tell you which entry fits your base. For the park itself, start with our Gishwati-Mukura access guide.

What

What the Journey Is Like

Leaving Kigali, the road climbs and drops through terraced hills where farmers grow tea, banana and vegetables, and the views change with every bend. Traffic thins quickly once you leave the city. Expect slow trucks on the climbs and plenty of people walking along the verges, so drivers go carefully. The last stretch can be steep and muddy after rain, which is why a 4x4 safari vehicle is the sensible choice. Allow generous time rather than trying to squeeze the forest in on a short day.

Where

Where to Break the Trip

The simplest plan is to stay one night near Lake Kivu or Musanze and visit the forest on a full day from there. A morning start gives you the best light and bird activity. If you are coming from the gorillas, the Musanze to Rubavu route makes a natural connection. If you are travelling the other way, Kigali to Kibuye sets up a lakeside base before you enter the forest.

Why

Why Go to the Forest

Gishwati-Mukura is a recovering landscape, and its appeal lies in quiet walks, birds, monkeys and the sense of a habitat being rebuilt. Travellers who have already seen gorillas often enjoy the contrast. Read the wildlife guide and activities guide to decide how long to stay.

Season

Season and Road Conditions

Dry months make the hill tracks easier, while the rainy seasons can turn side roads slippery. Rain also brings cloud, so build in a spare half-day if you can. Check best time to visit and Rwanda's seasons before fixing dates.

Preparing

Preparing for the Day

Bring walking shoes with good grip, a light waterproof, insect protection, water and a packed lunch. Carry binoculars and keep a small bag for the car. Confirm permits and guide arrangements with your operator ahead of time rather than on the morning. Our East Africa packing list covers the essentials.

Fitting

Fitting It Into an Itinerary

A realistic plan is Kigali to Musanze for the gorillas, a night at Rubavu or on the lake, then a forest day before returning to the capital. See Rwanda itineraries of three to seven days for pacing ideas.
