East Africa Primates Circuit: Gorillas and Chimpanzees in Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania
The East Africa primates circuit links the mountain gorillas of Uganda and Rwanda with chimpanzee forests in Uganda, Rwanda and western Tanzania, for travellers whose priority is apes rather than plains game.
Most safaris treat primates as one chapter among many. This circuit turns them into the whole story, following the Albertine Rift forests where mountain gorillas live, then the chimpanzee habitats of Kibale and Nyungwe, and finally the remote Lake Tanganyika shore in Tanzania, where chimpanzees live beside one of the deepest lakes in Africa.
This pillar guide explains why the three countries work together, how the route runs, how long to allow and who it suits. Seven companion pages cover itineraries, borders, seasons, practicalities and questions in detail.
This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

- Core species: Mountain gorilla, chimpanzee, golden monkey
- Typical length: 8 to 16 days
- Permits: One gorilla permit per country trekked
- Visa note: Tanzania needs its own visa
Why Combine Three Countries
Each country offers something the others do not. Uganda has the widest primate variety in one place, with gorillas in Bwindi and Mgahinga, chimpanzees in Kibale and a dozen or more species of monkey. Rwanda adds compact, well-organised trekking from Volcanoes National Park and the high canopy walk of Nyungwe. Tanzania brings a very different mood: remote chimpanzee forest meeting a freshwater lake, reached by small aircraft or boat. Together they let you compare gorilla and chimpanzee behaviour in three distinct forests. For a broader view of the apes, read the East Africa primates and gorillas guide.
The Route in Outline
A classic sequence starts in Entebbe or Kigali. From Uganda you visit Kibale for chimpanzees and Bwindi for gorillas, cross to Rwanda by road for Volcanoes National Park, add golden monkeys and perhaps Nyungwe for chimpanzees and the canopy walk, and finish with a flight into western Tanzania for chimpanzees on the Lake Tanganyika shore. The sequence can be reversed or trimmed. Rwanda and Uganda can be joined by a long road day, while Tanzania is normally reached by air. See the route and border guide for transfer detail.
How Many Days to Allow
A tight trip covering Uganda and Rwanda only fits into about a week, while adding Tanzania properly needs at least ten days because the western Tanzanian forests are remote and transfers are slow. Two weeks or more gives space for rest days, which matter after steep treks. Our short itinerary, medium itinerary and long itinerary show how pacing changes with length.
What Each Stop Offers
Uganda: Bwindi for gorillas, Kibale for chimpanzee trekking and Mgahinga for gorillas and golden monkeys. Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park for gorillas and golden monkeys, and Nyungwe for chimpanzees, colobus and the canopy walk. Tanzania: forested mountains and lakeshore reserves in the west, quite unlike the northern safari circuit. Every stop has its own pace, accommodation style and fitness demand.
Who the Circuit Suits
It suits travellers with a genuine interest in great apes, photographers who want varied forest light, and repeat visitors who have already done a plains safari. It is less suited to anyone who dislikes long travel days, steep and muddy walking or limited facilities in remote places. Walking sticks, porters and good boots matter. Read gorilla trekking fitness and preparation before you commit.
Permits, Visas and Rules
Gorilla permits are national. Uganda, Rwanda and Congo permits are issued separately, so each country you trek in needs its own permit, and this page does not quote prices. For Uganda see gorilla permits explained, and for Rwanda Rwanda permits and rules. The East Africa Tourist Visa covers Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda, but Tanzania requires its own visa, and fees must be checked on the official government sites before travel. See the practical guide.
Choosing Between Countries
If you can only afford time for two countries, compare Uganda vs Rwanda gorilla trekking first. Uganda tends to offer more variety and a wilder feel, Rwanda shorter transfers from Kigali. Adding Tanzania is a deliberate choice for chimpanzee lovers and travellers who want a lake and forest finish.
