Nyungwe National Park FAQs: Chimpanzees, Canopy Walk, Colobus and Planning
Nyungwe National Park is one of Africa's oldest and richest montane rainforests, known for chimpanzee trekking, large colobus troops, a canopy walkway and exceptional birdlife.
Located in south-western Rwanda, Nyungwe offers a very different experience from the volcano parks. Mist, tree ferns, orchids and calls from the canopy define the atmosphere.
These answers cover the activities, wildlife and practical details you need to plan a visit.
This guide is part of our Uganda facts and travel information guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Chimpanzees and Primates
Can I track chimpanzees in Nyungwe?
Yes, habituated groups are visited on guided treks that often start very early, and sightings depend on where the chimpanzees have moved. See Nyungwe versus Kibale for a comparison.
Which other primates are present?
Nyungwe holds a remarkable variety of primates, including large troops of Angolan colobus, blue monkeys and owl-faced monkeys. See East Africa primates.
Canopy Walk and Trails
What is the canopy walkway?
It is a suspended walkway reached from forest trails, giving a view from the tree tops over the forest. Visits are by guided group, and it suits anyone comfortable with heights. See canopy walk and forest trails.
What other trails exist?
Trails range from short walks to waterfalls to longer day hikes with different forest and birding interests. Your guide will match them to your fitness.
Birds and Nature
Is Nyungwe good for birdwatching?
Yes, it is a major site for Albertine Rift endemic birds, plus many forest species. Dawn walks are best. See birding guide.
What plants and scenery can I expect?
Tall trees, tree ferns, orchids, streams and misty ridges make the forest scenic, and tea estates mark its edge.
Getting There
How far is Nyungwe from Kigali?
The drive is a long day, usually broken by stops, with the road passing through hills and villages. See Kigali to Nyungwe route.
How many nights should I spend?
Two nights allow a trek and a walk, and three provide time for birding or a second trail. Compare with the 3-day Nyungwe chimpanzee tour.
Seasons
When is the best time to visit?
Dry months from June to August and December to February are easier for trails, though rain can occur at any time in the forest. See best time to visit Rwanda.
Is it cold?
Mornings are cool, and mist is common, so bring layers and waterproofs. See the packing list.
Fitness and Safety
How fit do I need to be?
Treks can be steep and muddy, so reasonable fitness helps. Walking poles and good boots make a difference.
Is it safe to visit?
Guided walks are well organised and rangers accompany groups. Follow your guide's instructions and keep a safe distance from primates.
Planning Details
Can I do Nyungwe as part of a longer route?
Yes. A common pattern runs from Kigali through the southern hills to Nyungwe, then north along Lake Kivu to the volcano parks. Plan at least two nights in the forest so that early treks are not rushed. See Rwanda safari itineraries.
