Rwanda Hiking Itinerary: Volcanoes, Karisoke, Nyungwe and the Congo Nile Trail
Rwanda offers satisfying hiking, from volcano slopes and crater lakes to rainforest trails and ridge walks along Lake Kivu, all within a small and well-organised country.
Hikers will find several distinct environments in Rwanda. The Virunga volcanoes offer steep, muddy climbs with dramatic views, Nyungwe has forest trails with waterfalls and primates, and Lake Kivu's hills are suited to longer walks and cycling.
The plans below link these areas, and suggest how to scale difficulty to your fitness. Weather and trail conditions vary, so always follow guide advice.
This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Hiking Options in the Volcanoes
The volcano hikes in Volcanoes National Park take guided groups up steep forested slopes to summits or crater lakes, depending on the volcano chosen. Conditions are often muddy and cool, and the altitude adds effort. Another option is the walk to the Karisoke area associated with Dian Fossey's research. See Volcanoes National Park activities and the Karisoke hike.
Seven-Day Itinerary
Day 1: arrive in Kigali. Day 2: drive to Musanze and rest. Day 3: volcano hike or the Karisoke hike. Day 4: gorilla trek or golden monkey tracking as a gentler alternative to a second climb. Day 5: transfer to Lake Kivu, with a short walk. Day 6: lakeside hike or a day on part of the Congo Nile Trail. Day 7: return to Kigali. The route balances effort with recovery days.
Ten-Day Itinerary
Add Nyungwe and extra Kivu time. After the lake, travel to Nyungwe for two nights, including a morning of chimpanzee tracking and a day on forest trails that lead to waterfalls and viewpoints. The canopy walk offers a different perspective. Return to Kigali on day ten. See Nyungwe activities and canopy walk and forest trails.
The Congo Nile Trail
This long trail follows the shore of Lake Kivu through hills, villages and farmland. Walkers or cyclists can choose a short stage or several days, with accommodation arranged in advance. It offers a close look at rural life, and the pace is up to you. See the Lake Kivu guide for how to plan a section.
Fitness, Altitude and Gear
Volcano hikes need good fitness and acclimatisation, so avoid scheduling the hardest hike on your first day at altitude. Carry waterproof clothing, sturdy boots, gloves, a hat and water. Porters and walking sticks are available for volcano hikes. See fitness and preparation and mountains and hiking in East Africa.
Seasons and Safety
Dry months are generally easier, and rainy months bring slippery trails and clouds. Always walk with a registered guide, check conditions on the day and respect closures. Allow flexibility for weather. See best time to visit Rwanda.
Combining Hiking With Wildlife
Many hikers end the trip with a gorilla trek or a few days in Akagera for relaxed wildlife viewing. See the eight-day itinerary for a route that mixes both.
Who This Route Suits
This itinerary suits fit travellers who enjoy long days on foot and are comfortable with mud, steep slopes and changing weather. It is less suitable for people with knee or heart conditions, or for those who dislike cold wet conditions. Less active travellers can choose gentler alternatives such as golden monkey tracking, forest walks and lakeside strolls. Whatever your level, be honest with your operator about your fitness so that the right hikes are arranged.
Packing and Preparation
Break in your boots well before the trip. Bring moisture-wicking layers, a lightweight waterproof jacket, trekking socks, a daypack, a water bottle and a small first-aid kit. Gloves help on vegetation and trekking poles help on steep slopes. Train with hill walks and stairs in the weeks beforehand, and plan a buffer day before your hardest hike. See the packing list and trekking rules for further preparation advice.
