Volcanoes National Park in the Dry Season: Gorilla Treks, Firm Trails and Clear Views
In the dry months, trails in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park are firmer, views of the Virunga volcanoes are clearer and gorilla treks are generally more comfortable, though the mountains stay cool and rain can still fall.
Volcanoes National Park lies in the Virunga range in north-west Rwanda, where bamboo, hagenia forest and montane slopes rise to volcanic peaks. Mountain gorillas live here, and the park is the centre of Rwanda's gorilla tourism. The weather is mountain weather, but the drier months make everything easier.
This page covers conditions, gorilla trekking, other activities, trails and packing. For wetter months see the Volcanoes National Park best-time guide and the Rwanda best-time guide.
This guide is part of our Uganda month-by-month and seasonal guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Dry Periods in Context
| Months | Conditions |
|---|---|
| December to February | A shorter dry period, with sunny spells and cool mornings |
| March to May | The long rains, wettest and muddiest |
| June to September | The main dry season, with the firmest trails |
| October and November | Short rains and fresh growth |
The mountains create their own weather, so rain can fall at any time. Dry-season showers are lighter and trails drain faster.
Gorilla Trekking in Drier Weather
Gorilla treks go ahead year-round. In dry months, trails are less slippery and the climb is easier on knees and boots, though steep sections remain. Group allocations and rules apply, and permits are required. Read Rwanda gorilla trekking, gorilla permits and rules and fitness and trekking preparation.
Golden Monkeys and Volcano Hikes
Golden monkey tracking, crater-lake hikes and volcano climbs are more comfortable in dry weather, and summit views are clearer. See Volcanoes National Park activities and the Volcanoes wildlife guide.
Birds and Photography
Dry spells make forest birding easier, and the Albertine Rift endemics are a draw. Clear mornings give strong volcano shots, and gorilla photography still needs a fast lens in dim forest. See Volcanoes birding and Albertine Rift endemic birds.
Roads and Access
The roads from Kigali are well maintained and the drive is straightforward. See the Kigali to Musanze route and how to get to Volcanoes National Park.
What to Pack
Pack waterproof jacket, gloves, long trousers, sturdy boots, gaiters, a fleece and a hat. Mornings are cold even in the dry months. Use what to wear for gorilla trekking and the packing list.
Preparing for the Trek
Fitness matters more than season, so train with hill walks and practise in the boots you will wear. Porters are available and are a welcome help on steep sections, while also supporting local livelihoods. Walking sticks help on slippery slopes, and gloves protect against nettles. Trekking times vary with gorilla movements, so be ready for anything from a short walk to a long climb. Read a day in the life of a gorilla trek and fitness and trekking preparation.
Combining Volcanoes With Other Rwanda Stops
The dry season is a good time to pair gorillas with Nyungwe, Lake Kivu and Akagera, since roads and trails are firmer. A three to eight-day plan can cover several habitats, and Kigali makes the best arrival and departure point. Read the Rwanda 5 and 10 day itineraries, the Kigali travel guide and the Lake Kivu, Nyungwe and Volcanoes combination.
Conservation and Respect
The rainy-season guide covers the opposite conditions. Gorilla tourism supports conservation and local communities, and the rules exist to protect the animals. Keep the required distance, avoid flash photography, stay in your group and never approach if you feel unwell. Following your guide's direction is the best way to keep both gorillas and visitors safe. Read the Rwanda responsible travel guide and Rwanda gorilla families and trekking groups.
Who the Dry Season Suits
It suits trekkers who want easier trails, photographers and first-timers. Permits sell early, so book well ahead. Plan with the Volcanoes itineraries, where to stay in Musanze and the Rwanda booking timeline.
