Zanzibar vs Diani Beach: Comparing Two East African Beach Escapes
Zanzibar is an island with a historic stone town, spice farms and varied beaches on several coasts, while Diani is a long, palm-lined beach on Kenya's south coast, reached by road or air from Mombasa and easy to add to a Kenyan safari.
Both destinations offer white sand, warm Indian Ocean water and a Swahili flavour, so the choice often comes down to what else you want from the trip. Zanzibar has more to explore beyond the beach; Diani is simpler, more compact and handy after a Kenya safari.
This page compares them evenly. For detail see the Zanzibar and Stone Town guide and the Diani Beach guide.

Character of the Beaches
Zanzibar's coasts differ: the north has beaches with less pronounced tide effects, while the east shows big tidal changes that shape swimming and activities; see the Zanzibar beaches by region guide and the Zanzibar beach best time guide. Diani is a long strip of sand with a reef offshore and calm water at many times; see the Kenya beach best time guide.
The tide matters more than many first-time visitors expect. On parts of Zanzibar's east coast, the sea can retreat far from the shore at low tide, leaving a wide flat that is good for walking and for seaweed farming but less good for swimming. Diani's reef offers calmer water at many times, although tides still influence the shoreline.
Things to Do
Zanzibar offers history, spice farms, forest walks and boat outings; see spice tours and Jozani Forest. Diani has water sports, forest and wildlife nearby, and boat trips to marine parks; see Diani activities and day trips. Both suit kitesurfers; see kitesurfing in Zanzibar and kitesurfing in Diani.
Diving and Snorkelling
Both have marine life and organised trips; see Zanzibar diving and snorkelling and Kenya coast diving and snorkelling. Conditions vary by season and site.
Water conditions affect snorkelling and diving trips on both coasts, as do winds and swell in different months. Good operators brief you on safety, give you equipment appropriate to your level and cancel trips when conditions are not suitable.
Seasons and Access
Dry months are generally the most comfortable on both coasts, while heavy rains bring humidity. Zanzibar is reached by flight or ferry; see Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar. Diani is reached from Mombasa; see Mombasa to Diani.
Flight routes and cost structures differ, so compare overall journey time as well as the beach itself. If you are already in Kenya, Diani is a natural finish. If you are already in Tanzania, Zanzibar is the obvious choice.
Who Each Suits
Zanzibar suits travellers who want culture and variety with their sand, such as couples and families; see Zanzibar honeymoon beaches and Zanzibar family beach holiday. Diani suits those wanting a relaxed, straightforward resort-style stay after a Kenya safari; see Kenya coast honeymoon guide.
Combining With a Safari
Pair Zanzibar with the northern circuit or southern parks; see the Tanzania safari and Zanzibar combination guide. Pair Diani with the Mara or Amboseli; see the Kenya safari and Diani combination guide.
