Best Time for a Kenya Beach Holiday: Seasons, Winds and Sea Conditions
The Kenyan coast is warm all year, but January to March and June to October are generally the best months for beach holidays, while April and May bring the heaviest rain.
The coast sits close to the equator, so temperatures change little through the year. What shifts are the rains, the humidity and the monsoon winds that shape the sea.
Understanding those patterns helps you choose a month that fits your priorities, whether those are calm swimming, diving visibility, kitesurfing or a quiet, green holiday.
This guide is part of our Uganda month-by-month and seasonal guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

- Cooler, breezy: June to October
- Short rains: November
- Warm all year: Sea and air
Practical Planning Notes
Whatever the month, plan around the tide and the sun. Check the tide table with your hotel on arrival, swim at high water, and save reef walks and rock-pool exploring for low tide. Apply sunscreen before going out, because the sea breeze hides how strong the equatorial sun is. Book boat trips and special dinners a few days ahead in peak periods, and keep one flexible day in case weather changes plans. If you are travelling with a safari, put the beach at the end, so you finish rested rather than rushed.
Reading the Coast Climate
Because the coast lies so close to the equator, daytime temperatures hardly change from month to month, and the sea stays warm enough for comfortable swimming throughout the year. What changes is humidity, cloud and wind. Humidity is highest just before and during the long rains, which can make midday heat feel heavy, while the cooler, breezier months in the middle of the year feel fresher. When people say a month is the best time, they usually mean the combination of sunshine, calm water and manageable humidity, and it is worth deciding which of those matters most to you.
The Coast Seasons
| Months | What to expect |
|---|---|
| January to March | Hot, sunny and mostly dry, calm seas, good for swimming and diving |
| April to May | Long rains, heavy showers, humid, quiet and green |
| June to October | Cooler and breezier, dry, windier sea |
| November | Short rains, warm, fewer visitors |
| December | Warm, festive demand, mixed weather |
Monsoon Winds and the Sea
Two seasonal wind patterns shape the coast. The northeast monsoon, known locally as kaskazi, brings hot, calmer weather in roughly the first months of the year. The southeast monsoon, kusi, arrives in the middle of the year with cooler air and stronger winds. Stronger winds suit kitesurfing, while calmer months suit swimming and boat trips. Seaweed can wash up on some beaches at certain times, so ask your hotel what to expect.
Rainy Season Notes
April and May bring the heaviest rain, with towering clouds and afternoon downpours that can be dramatic. Some smaller hotels close or reduce services, roads can be muddy and sea visibility drops. In return, rates are often lower, beaches are empty and the vegetation is vivid. Showers are often short, so mornings may still be pleasant. For an overview of the country, read the best time to visit Kenya and the long rains travel guide.
Diving, Snorkelling and Whale Watching
Visibility is usually best in calmer, drier months, though conditions vary by site and tide. Dolphins and turtles are seen across much of the year, and humpback whales are reported off the coast in some months of the second half of the year. Do not plan a holiday around any single sighting. See the diving and snorkelling guide.
Pairing the Coast With Safari
Many travellers combine a safari with a beach stay. The migration in the Masai Mara usually peaks in the middle of the year, which fits with cooler coast weather, while January and February suit both safari and beach. See best time for a safari and coast combination.
Choosing by Beach
Diani, covered in the Diani Beach guide, and Watamu, in the Watamu guide, behave slightly differently in windy months, with some stretches affected more than others. Ask your hotel what the beach is like in your travel month.
Packing for the Coast
Take light cotton clothing, a sunhat, reef shoes, high-factor sunscreen and a light rain jacket for the wetter months. See the East Africa packing list.
