Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar Combination: The Complete Guide to Bush and Beach
A Tanzania safari followed by a few days on Zanzibar is the classic bush and beach holiday: big game in the northern parks first, then warm Indian Ocean water, Stone Town and spice farms to unwind.
Tanzania is one of the few countries where world-class wildlife and a tropical island sit inside the same national borders. That means one visa, one currency and a simple domestic flight between the two halves of the trip. Most travellers spend the first part of their holiday in the northern safari circuit and finish on Zanzibar, so the pace slows as the trip goes on.
This page is the pillar for our Tanzania and Zanzibar combination pages. It explains the logic of the route, how many days to allow, who it suits and what each stop offers, then points to the day-by-day itineraries, the route guide, the best-time page, the practical guide and the FAQs.
This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Why Combine a Safari With Zanzibar
Game drives are rewarding but tiring. Early starts, dust and long days in a vehicle are part of the appeal, yet most people are glad of a few days to do nothing afterwards. Zanzibar provides that contrast: swimming, snorkelling, long lunches and slow evenings. It also adds culture to a wildlife trip, because Stone Town has a long Swahili, Arab and Indian history that is quite unlike the highlands around Arusha. The result is a holiday with variety rather than one long drive.
The Shape of the Route
Almost every trip starts near Arusha or Kilimanjaro airport and moves through the northern circuit in an arc. A typical sequence is Tarangire or Lake Manyara, then the Ngorongoro highlands, then the Serengeti, before a scheduled flight from a Serengeti airstrip or from Arusha to Zanzibar. Reverse routes exist, but safari first and beach last is the usual advice, since it avoids packing salt-stained luggage into a Land Cruiser and lets you recover at the end. See the northern circuit for the safari half.
How Many Days to Allow
Five to seven days is the minimum that feels sensible: three on safari and two or three on the coast. Eight to ten days lets you include both the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater without rushing, with three nights on the island. Two weeks or more allows a gentler pace, a second beach area, a visit to Jozani Forest and perhaps a southern park. The three itinerary pages break these lengths into days: short, medium and long.
What Each Safari Stop Offers
| Stop | What it is known for |
|---|---|
| Tarangire | Elephant herds, baobab trees, a good first park |
| Lake Manyara | Forest, lake shore and birds on a compact circuit |
| Ngorongoro Crater | A volcanic caldera with dense wildlife and black rhinos |
| Serengeti | Vast plains, big cats and the wildebeest migration |
What Zanzibar Adds
The island offers more than sand. Stone Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of narrow lanes, carved doors and markets; spice tours explain the clove and cinnamon trade that shaped the island; and Jozani Forest shelters the endemic Zanzibar red colobus. Beach areas differ widely, from the north coast to the tidal east, which is explained in Zanzibar beaches by region and in the Zanzibar and Stone Town guide.
Who This Trip Suits
The route works well for honeymooners, families with older children, first-time safari travellers and anyone who wants wildlife without giving up a swimming holiday. It suits people who like a single country with a simple structure. It is less suited to travellers who dislike flying in small aircraft, who want to see gorillas, or who have only four days in total, in which case a shorter safari or a beach-only trip may be a better choice.
Making the Most of the Contrast
The best bush and beach trips treat the two halves as different holidays with a shared thread. On safari, keep your days structured around sunrise and late afternoon, with a long rest between. On the island, let the structure go: choose one morning activity, such as a boat trip or a market walk, and leave the rest open. Packing reflects the same split, with neutral layers for the bush and light, quick-drying clothes for the coast. Travellers who plan the second half too tightly often end up as tired on the beach as they were in the vehicle, so protect at least two completely free days.
Planning Next Steps
Use the route guide to understand flights and transfers, the best-time page to pick your months, and the practical guide for visas, health and luggage. Our 9-day bush and beach safari is a good example of how the trip is assembled, and East Africa safari combinations shows how other countries can be added. Official park tariffs apply and are not quoted on this page.
