Best Time for a Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar Combination: Month by Month

June to October is the best combined window for Tanzania and Zanzibar, with dry safari conditions and sunny coastal weather, while January and February are a strong second option.

Both halves of the trip are influenced by two rainy periods, the long rains from roughly March to May and the short rains around November. The northern parks and the island are affected differently, so a month that suits one half may be poorer for the other.

This page goes through the year, then summarises the combined window. For general guidance see best time to visit Tanzania.

Safari

Safari Conditions

The dry months, June to October, give the easiest game viewing because grass is short and animals gather near water. July to October is when herds reach the northern Serengeti, and you can read the details in the migration calendar. January and February bring calving to the southern plains, and predators follow. The rainy season is quiet and beautiful but some tracks are slow.

Zanzibar

Zanzibar Conditions

The island is hot and humid from December to February, comfortably warm and breezy from June to October, and wet in April and May, when some smaller beach properties close for maintenance. The east coast has strong tides, so swimming depends on the time of day. See Zanzibar beaches by region for how tides and winds affect each coast.

Picking

Picking Your Window

If you must choose a single window, aim for late June to October, ideally with the safari in August or September and the beach straight afterwards. January and February suit travellers who want calving and hot weather. If you prefer fewer visitors and lower rates, consider the short transition months, but accept some showers. Our medium itinerary can be adapted to any of these windows.

Crowds

Crowds and Booking

Peak months are July to October and Christmas to early January. Lodges in the Serengeti, and beach properties on Zanzibar, fill early, so book months ahead. Flights between regions also have limited seats in busy periods.

Shoulder

Shoulder Seasons and Special Interests

Shoulder months can be excellent value. Late May and early June, as the rains fade, have green scenery and fewer vehicles, and October can be a quiet, still-dry time before the short rains. Birdwatchers will enjoy the green season, when migrant species are present, while divers and snorkellers tend to prefer calmer seas outside the heaviest rain. Photographers often favour the clear air of the dry months, though dramatic skies in the wetter months produce striking images. Tell your operator what matters most and they can suggest the best months for your priorities.

What

What to Pack by Season

Dry months have cold mornings in the highlands, and the Ngorongoro rim can be chilly in any season. Bring a rain jacket for the green season and reef-safe sun protection for the coast. See the packing list and the East Africa best time guide.
