Rwanda Gorillas and Zanzibar Combination: Mountains, Primates and Indian Ocean Beaches
Pairing mountain gorillas in Rwanda with Zanzibar gives you one of the most memorable hours in wildlife travel followed by warm water, spice farms and a Swahili old town.
Rwanda and Zanzibar are different in almost every way: one is a green, hilly, landlocked country at altitude, the other a tropical island with a long maritime history. That contrast is the appeal. Rwanda delivers a physical, emotional wildlife encounter, and Zanzibar delivers rest.
This pillar page explains how the trip works, how much time to allow and who it suits, and links to the itineraries, route guide, best-time page, practical guide and FAQs for this combination.

At a glance
- Route: Kigali, Volcanoes National Park, flight to Zanzibar
- Typical length: 7 to 14 days
- Gorillas: Volcanoes National Park
- Beach: Zanzibar coast and Stone Town
- Visas: Separate for Rwanda and Tanzania
Why This Pairing Works
A gorilla trek is demanding and moving, and many travellers want a gentle contrast afterwards. Rwanda's compact size means you can reach the gorillas within a few days of landing, leaving more time for the coast. Zanzibar offers the slow rhythm that a hiking trip lacks. If you prefer, you can add Nyungwe Forest or Akagera National Park first and turn the trip into a longer primate and wildlife journey, but a simple gorilla-and-beach structure suits many people.
The Shape of the Route
Most itineraries start in Kigali, drive to Musanze for the gorillas, return to Kigali and then travel to Zanzibar, usually with a connection through a regional hub. The island portion is an international journey between two countries, not a domestic hop, so allow for transit time and check current schedules with your operator. See the route guide.
Rwanda Stops
| Stop | What you get |
|---|---|
| Kigali | A clean, calm capital with memorials, crafts and cafes |
| Volcanoes National Park | Mountain gorilla trekking and golden monkeys |
| Nyungwe Forest | Chimpanzees, canopy walk and montane forest |
| Akagera | Savannah game drives and boat trips |
Zanzibar Stops
Stone Town offers history, markets and food, and the coast provides beaches in several moods. Read Zanzibar and Stone Town guide and Zanzibar beaches by region to match an area to your style. Nature lovers should add Jozani Forest for the Zanzibar red colobus, and snorkellers might add Mnemba Island.
How Many Days to Allow
A tight version takes five to seven days: one or two nights in Kigali and Musanze, a gorilla trek, and three nights on Zanzibar. Eight to twelve days allow a second Rwandan activity and a comfortable beach stay. Thirteen days or more allow Nyungwe, Akagera and a quieter island. See the short, medium and long itineraries.
Permits and Planning Notes
Gorilla permits are national, limited in number and need booking early. A permit for Rwanda does not cover Uganda or Congo. See Rwanda gorilla permits and trekking rules for how they work. Official tariffs apply and are not quoted here. Tanzania requires its own visa, so read the practical guide before booking.
Making the Contrast Work
The combination succeeds when each half has room. In Rwanda, keep the days before the trek calm so that you arrive at the park fit and rested. After the trek, take a quiet afternoon and a good meal. On Zanzibar, allow a full day for the journey and a free day to adjust, since the change in climate from cool highlands to humid coast is noticeable. Pack light layers that work in both places, and keep your hiking boots and waterproofs easy to reach. A modest plan, rather than an ambitious one, tends to give the most satisfying holiday.
Who It Suits
The combination suits keen walkers who want a reward, couples celebrating special occasions and travellers who value a short but varied holiday. It is less suited to anyone who cannot manage a hike at altitude, in which case a gentler Rwandan option, or a beach-only trip, may be better.
