Rwanda Gorillas and Zanzibar Medium Itinerary: 8 to 12 Days

With eight to twelve days you can pair gorillas with a second Rwandan highlight, such as golden monkeys, Nyungwe chimpanzees or Akagera game drives, and still enjoy a proper stay on Zanzibar.

This length gives Rwanda room to breathe. You can add a rest day around the gorilla trek, explore Lake Kivu or Nyungwe, and still have three to five nights on the coast.

The outlines below cover 8, 10 and 12 days. They show the order of stops and where to slow down. See the combination guide for background.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Ten-Day

Ten-Day Outline

Add Akagera or Nyungwe. A night or two in Akagera brings savannah game drives and a boat trip, which feels very different from the forest. Alternatively, drive across the country to Nyungwe Forest for chimpanzee tracking and the canopy walk. Both require a long day of travel, so pick one rather than both on a ten-day plan.

Twelve-Day

Twelve-Day Outline

Twelve days allows both a second Rwandan park and a longer coastal stay, split between Stone Town and a beach hotel. You may take a day on Lake Kivu to rest after the trek, or visit Jozani Forest on the island. The final days can be fully relaxed, with a boat trip to Mnemba Island or simply long lunches by the sea.

Pacing

Pacing Notes

A rest day after the gorilla trek is wise for most travellers, since muscles can be sore and the drive back is long. Avoid early flights straight after the trek. The transit to Zanzibar is the only complicated part of the plan, and a spare night in Kigali is cheap insurance. Always check current flight schedules with your operator.

Choosing

Choosing the Right Second Park

Choose Nyungwe if you like forests, birds and primates, Akagera if you want classic safari scenery, and Lake Kivu if you want a relaxed lakeside break. Compare options in Rwanda safari itineraries. Our 8-day Rwanda gorilla and primates safari is a worked example of the Rwandan half.

Day

Day Rhythm and Travel Time

Rwandan roads are generally good, but mountain and forest routes take time, and travel days can feel longer than the distance suggests. Plan one major transfer per day at most, and arrange breaks for coffee, lunch or a short walk. Keep your gorilla day free of other commitments. The journey to the coast is an international connection, so treat it as a full travel day with no tours attached. Planning this way keeps energy high, and the first morning on Zanzibar feels like a genuine arrival rather than a recovery.
