Best Time for Rwanda Gorillas and Zanzibar: Month-by-Month Guide

June to September is the best combined window for Rwanda gorillas and Zanzibar, because the mountains are at their driest and the island is sunny and breezy.

Rwanda has two dry seasons and two rainy seasons, and Zanzibar follows a similar pattern with long and short rains. The patterns overlap, which means timing a combined trip is relatively straightforward.

Gorilla trekking runs all year, but mud and rain change the experience. See the Rwanda best time guide for more on the country.

Trekking

Trekking Conditions

In the dry months the trails are firmer and the going is easier, though the hike remains steep and at altitude. In the rainy months trails are muddy and slippery, but gorillas often stay lower on the slopes. Bring waterproofs and gaiters in any season. Read Volcanoes National Park best time for park-specific advice.

Zanzibar

Zanzibar Conditions

From June to October the island is cooler and breezy, and December to February is hot and humid. April and May bring the heaviest rain, and some smaller beach hotels close. East coast tides affect swimming at all times of year. See Zanzibar beaches by region.

Choosing

Choosing Your Window

For most people, late June to September is ideal: dry for the trek, sunny for the beach, and easy for planning. January and February are a strong alternative, though the coast is hotter. If you prefer lower crowds and are happy with showers, consider March or November. Gorilla permits are limited, so book early for peak periods; see permits and trekking rules.

Other Rwandan Stops

Nyungwe Forest receives rain for much of the year, so pack for showers; see Nyungwe best time. Akagera is best in the dry months, as described in Akagera best time.

Planning

Planning Around Your Priorities

If the gorillas matter most, choose the drier months for easier trails and prioritise permit availability. If the beach matters most, favour the cooler and breezier months on Zanzibar, which are also dry in Rwanda. Travellers who prefer lush scenery and quieter trails might choose the shoulder months and accept some rain. If you plan to add a safari in Tanzania, read the Tanzania best time guide too, because wildlife patterns there follow their own rhythm. A flexible traveller can often secure good conditions in the shoulder periods. It is also worth remembering that weather in the mountains is changeable at any time of year, so a dry-season trek may still include a shower, and a rainy-season trek may include long sunny spells. Pack for both and treat the forecast as a guide rather than a promise.

Packing

Packing Notes

Pack waterproofs, a warm layer for the mountains, sturdy boots and sun protection for the coast. See the packing list, and return to the combination guide for the full route.
