Rwanda Gorillas and Zanzibar Long Itinerary: 13 to 18 Days of Primates, Wildlife and Coast

Thirteen to eighteen days let you see all of Rwanda's highlights, add a Tanzanian safari stop if you wish, and finish with a long, slow stay on Zanzibar.

A long itinerary removes the pressure. You can enjoy gorillas, golden monkeys, chimpanzees and Akagera at a human pace, then take real time on the coast. Many travellers also add the Serengeti or Ngorongoro before the beach.

The following outlines cover 13, 15 and 18 days. Consult the guide for the rationale.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Fifteen-Day

Fifteen-Day Outline

Add Akagera. After the western forests, travel east to Akagera for game drives and a boat trip, then return to Kigali. This sequence gives you mountain, forest, lake and savannah in a single country, which is possible only because Rwanda is compact. See Kigali to Akagera route and Kigali to Nyungwe route for how the road links work.

Eighteen-Day

Eighteen-Day Outline

With eighteen days you can include a Tanzanian safari between Rwanda and the coast. For instance, spend a few days in the northern circuit, then fly to the island. See Rwanda and Tanzania safari and the northern circuit for ideas. Because this adds international sectors, ask your operator to confirm routing and baggage limits early.

Resting

Resting Between Highlights

Long trips need rest days. Build in a lakeside afternoon at Lake Kivu, a slow morning in Kigali and a free day on Zanzibar with no plans. These pauses make the highlights better.

Choosing

Choosing Your Coast Time

With five or more nights on Zanzibar, you may split your stay between Stone Town and one or two beach areas. The north and east coasts differ greatly, as described in Zanzibar beaches by region. Add Jozani Forest and a spice tour for variety.

A

A Longer View of Rwanda

Beyond the main parks, Rwanda rewards time. Community visits, coffee and tea tours, craft markets and the memorial sites in Kigali add depth to a primate-focused trip; see Rwanda coffee and tea tours and Rwandan culture and etiquette. Lake Kivu offers a gentle contrast to the forest and the mountains. Longer trips also allow flexibility for weather, so if a trek day is wet, you can adjust without losing a key experience. Ask your operator to build in a spare day wherever the route allows it. Finally, think about the order of the whole journey: gorillas early, forest and savannah in the middle, and the island at the end. That sequence keeps the most physical days away from the end of the trip and means your last memories are of warm water and unhurried evenings rather than airport queues. Small touches help too, such as a laundry stop in Kigali and a spare day before your flight home.
