Rwanda Gorillas and Zanzibar Route Guide: Flights, Transit and Documents

There is no practical land route from Rwanda to Zanzibar for most travellers, so the link is an international flight, usually with a connection, followed by a transfer on the island.

Rwanda and Tanzania are separate countries with separate visa arrangements, and Zanzibar is part of Tanzania. Crossing between them is therefore an international journey, even though the trip feels like a continuous holiday.

We do not state flight times, fares or timetables, because they change. Check current schedules with your operator before you finalise any plan.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

Starting in Kigali

Most travellers land at Kigali International Airport and transfer by road to Musanze. The drive is on good roads, and Kigali itself is worth a short visit. Our Kigali travel guide and gorilla tours from Kigali explain the options. Arriving a day before the trek reduces fatigue.

Getting

Getting From Rwanda to Zanzibar

The standard approach is to fly from Kigali to Zanzibar, usually with a connection in a regional hub. Services vary by season, so ask your operator which options suit your dates. Allow generous connection times and avoid tight onward bookings. Keep your gorilla trek early in the itinerary so any delay does not affect it.

Why

Why Not Go by Road

Overland travel between Rwanda, Tanzania and the coast involves long distances, several border posts and ferry links. It is possible for adventurous travellers with plenty of time, but it is not a practical route for a short holiday. Safari travellers who want to see more of Tanzania can instead fly in and combine the trip with the northern parks; see Rwanda and Tanzania safari.

Visas

Visas and Documents

Rwanda is covered by the East Africa Tourist Visa shared with Kenya and Uganda, while Tanzania requires its own visa. Zanzibar is covered by the Tanzanian visa. Confirm fees and application processes on the official sites before you travel. Carry your passport, visa confirmation, any health documents requested and a copy of your itinerary. See East Africa visa guide and Rwanda visa and practical information.

Arrival

Arrival on Zanzibar

Your hotel can arrange a transfer from Zanzibar airport. Stone Town is close, while the north and east coasts are a longer drive. Confirm your journey time and pick-up details, and carry local currency or a card for small expenses. Pick your coast from the beaches by region page.

Connections

Connections and Practical Sense

International connections can be the most variable part of this trip. Choose itineraries that leave a comfortable margin, keep a printed copy of your tickets, and ensure that baggage is checked through to your final destination if your operator advises it. Travel with essential medicines, a change of clothes and valuables in hand luggage. If you are delayed, contact your operator promptly so that transfers and hotels can be moved. Finally, be flexible about the exact route: a connection through a different hub may suit you better than a nominally shorter option.

Luggage

Luggage and Pacing

Rwanda has no light-aircraft requirement for the gorillas, but if you add a Tanzanian safari, soft bags are necessary. Pack hiking gear in hand luggage in case checked bags are delayed. See the practical guide and the best-time page for more advice.
