Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar Medium Itinerary: 8 to 12 Days

Eight to twelve days is the sweet spot for Tanzania and Zanzibar, giving enough time for the full northern circuit, a proper stay in the Serengeti and a relaxed week-end on the island.

This length lets you follow the classic route without rushing: Tarangire, the Ngorongoro highlands, the Serengeti, then Zanzibar. Game drives fill the first half, and the second half is for the beach, Stone Town and a day or two of low-effort exploring.

Below are an 8-day, a 10-day and a 12-day outline. Each shows the order of stops and where the pace slows, and you can mix pieces from each. The overall rationale is in the combination guide.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Ten-Day

Ten-Day Outline

Add a night at Lake Manyara or a second night in the Serengeti. With ten days you can base yourself in two Serengeti areas, for instance central Seronera and a quieter region, and see more variety. Beach time extends to four nights, making room for a visit to Jozani Forest and a sunset dhow cruise. The extra safari night is better spent in the Serengeti than anywhere else because distances there are large.

Twelve-Day

Twelve-Day Outline

Twelve days brings real breathing space: three nights in the northern parks before the Serengeti, three or four in the Serengeti, and five on the coast. You may split the coast stay between Stone Town and a beach lodge on the north or east side, or add a boat day to Mnemba Island for snorkelling. This is a good length for couples celebrating an occasion.

Pacing

Pacing Notes

The longest day is usually the drive between Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, and the journey back to Arusha after the Serengeti, unless you fly. Plan your flights early because small aircraft schedules and baggage limits can shape the whole itinerary. Seasonal timing also matters, since migration positions affect which Serengeti region to choose; see the migration calendar.

Where

Where to Spend Extra Nights

If you have a spare night, give it to the Serengeti first, the Ngorongoro rim second and Tarangire third. Spending two nights on the coast before the safari is rarely worth it. A day for Stone Town and spice farms suits the end of the trip, once you are in a relaxed mood.

Matching

Matching the Outline to Your Interests

Birdwatchers might prefer an extra night at Lake Manyara or Tarangire, where bird lists are strong. Photographers usually benefit from additional time in the Serengeti, where light and open space give more compositional choices; see safari photography tips. Families with older children may enjoy the Ngorongoro Crater because each drive is short and rich in sightings. Couples often prefer a longer island stay with a night in Stone Town and a night at a beach hotel. Talking through these preferences early lets your operator move nights around without adding days.
