Best Time to Visit Gishwati-Mukura National Park: Seasons, Mud and Birding

The drier months of June to September and December to February give the firmest trails and clearest forest days at Gishwati-Mukura, although mist and showers can occur in any month.

Gishwati-Mukura is a montane forest park in the western highlands, so weather is cooler and wetter than in the lowlands. Steep, muddy trails can make a big difference to how comfortable a walk feels.

Wildlife lives in the forest all year, so timing is mainly about comfort, visibility and combining the park with other parts of Rwanda.

This guide is part of our Uganda month-by-month and seasonal guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Why

Why the Dry Months Are Easier

In drier months the paths are less slippery, rivers are lower and views over the forest and the hills beyond are clearer. Mornings are cool and mist often burns off by midday. Walking is more comfortable, and you can concentrate on listening for birds and primates rather than watching your footing. These months also match the main gorilla trekking season, so you can link the park with other attractions. See best time to visit Rwanda.

Visiting

Visiting in the Rains

Rain makes the forest lush and vibrant, and bird activity can be high. The trade-offs are muddy, steep trails, wet clothing and a greater chance of cloud hiding views. Good waterproofs, gaiters and sturdy boots turn a wet visit into a rewarding one, and you will probably have the forest to yourself. Allow extra time and be prepared to adjust plans around heavy showers.

Primates

Primates and Birds Through the Year

Primates and forest birds can be seen in every season, but they are most active in the early hours. Rain may keep animals under cover, while bright weather after a shower can trigger lively activity. If birding is your goal, the months around October and November, when migrants arrive, are worth considering. See bird checklists and best months in the region for an idea of regional patterns.

Temperatures

Temperatures and Clothing

Highland forests are cool, especially early in the day, so wear layers, a rain jacket and sturdy footwear. See East Africa packing list and health and vaccinations.

Photography

Photography and Light

Forest photography needs patience. Overcast skies give soft, even light that suits mossy trunks and ferns, while bright intervals after rain make the canopy glow. Bring a lens cloth, a waterproof cover for your camera and a plastic bag for your gear, as humidity and drizzle are common. A tripod is rarely practical on steep ground, so raise your ISO and use a fast shutter speed for moving birds and monkeys.

Combining

Combining the Park With Other Stops

Because Gishwati-Mukura lies near Lake Kivu, you can pair it with relaxing days on the lake in any season. Plan around the weather by keeping forest visits flexible. See Lake Kivu, the Gishwati-Mukura wildlife guide and how to get there.
