Kenya Masai Mara and Rwanda Gorillas Combination: Savannah Big Cats and Mountain Gorillas
This combination pairs the open plains and big cats of the Masai Mara with a misty-forest gorilla trek in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park, linked by a short flight between Nairobi and Kigali.
Few pairings in Africa offer such contrast. In the Mara you watch lions and herds across wide grassland, while in Volcanoes National Park you walk into bamboo and montane forest for an hour with a gorilla family.
This guide explains how the trip is built, how long to allow, how permits fit in and who will enjoy it. Seven companion pages cover itineraries, routes, timing, practicalities and common questions.
This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Why Combine the Mara and the Gorillas
Both experiences rank among the great wildlife encounters of East Africa, and they are different enough that each makes the other feel fresh. The Mara delivers predators, scale and, in season, the Great Migration. Rwanda delivers a quiet, intimate meeting with mountain gorillas in a compact, well-organised country. Doing both lets you see two ecosystems and two conservation stories in a single journey. For background on each, read the Masai Mara guide and Rwanda gorilla trekking.
The Route in Outline
Most itineraries begin in Nairobi, travel to the Mara by road or light aircraft, return to Nairobi and then fly to Kigali. From Kigali you drive to Musanze, the base for Volcanoes National Park, trek on a permitted day and then return to Kigali for departure. You could reverse the order if flights suit better. The legs are explained in the route and border guide and in Kigali to Musanze.
How Many Days to Allow
Six or seven days is the minimum, allowing a short Mara stay, an international flight day and a gorilla trek. Eight to twelve days is more comfortable, with several Mara game drives, a rest day and optional extras in Rwanda such as golden monkeys. Thirteen days or more lets you add Akagera or Nyungwe. See the short itinerary, medium itinerary and long itinerary.
What Rwanda Adds
Rwanda is small, safe and scenic, with excellent roads and an emphasis on conservation. Beyond gorillas, you can track golden monkeys, visit Kigali's memorials and culture sites, or explore Akagera for savannah wildlife and Nyungwe for chimpanzees. Read Volcanoes National Park and Kigali travel guide for what the northern stage offers.
Permits and Booking Priorities
A gorilla permit is the key booking and should be secured first, since trekking dates drive the whole plan. Permits are issued by country, so Rwanda's permit covers only Rwanda. Operators usually handle this, but you need to commit to dates early. Read Rwanda gorilla permits and trekking rules and then build the Mara section around the permit date. Official tariffs apply and are not quoted here.
Who This Combination Suits
It suits travellers who want classic big-game safari and primate trekking without a long overland journey, including honeymooners, friends and families with teenagers old enough to trek. Rwanda sets a minimum age for gorilla trekking, so check this before booking. Treks involve walking on steep, muddy trails at altitude, so reasonable fitness helps. Those wanting a slower pace can choose fewer destinations and longer stays.
Planning Considerations
The two countries operate on different time zones and have separate entry arrangements, though the East Africa Tourist Visa has covered Kenya and Rwanda, so check the current position on the official sites. Keep a spare day before an international departure in case of delay. Read the practical guide for details on documents, health and luggage.
