Akagera National Park FAQs: Big Five, Boats, Night Drives and Access From Kigali
Akagera is Rwanda's only savanna park, a landscape of lakes, papyrus swamps and rolling plains where lions, rhinos, elephants, giraffes and hippos can all be seen.
Rwanda is best known for gorillas, but Akagera adds a classic safari to the same trip. The park lies in the east, along the Tanzanian border, and is a comfortable drive from Kigali.
These answers explain the wildlife, the activities and how to plan a visit.
This guide is part of our Uganda facts and travel information guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

The Park
What makes Akagera special?
It combines savanna, wetlands and lakes in one compact area, and its wildlife has been rebuilt through a long partnership between the government and a conservation organisation. Read the Akagera National Park guide.
Is it really a Big Five park?
Yes, lions and black rhinos were reintroduced, and elephants and buffalo are also present, alongside leopards that are rarely seen. Rhinos are shy, so patience helps.
Wildlife
Which animals are easiest to see?
Giraffes, zebras, impalas, topi, buffalo and hippos are usually easy, and elephants are often found near water. Lions can be found with a guide's help. See African big cats.
What about birds?
The lakes and papyrus hold a wealth of birdlife, including fish eagles, kingfishers and herons, with rarer papyrus specialists for dedicated birders. See birding guide.
Activities
Can I take a boat trip?
Boat trips on Lake Ihema reveal hippos, crocodiles and waterbirds from a new angle. See Akagera game drives, boat trips and night safaris.
Are night drives available?
Night drives with a guide reveal nocturnal animals such as genets and civets. Availability depends on operators and conditions.
Getting There and Time Needed
How far is Akagera from Kigali?
By road the trip takes roughly two to three hours, so it can be a day trip, though an overnight stay is better. See Kigali to Akagera route.
How long should I stay?
Two nights suit most travellers, with a morning drive, afternoon boat trip and a night activity.
Seasons
When is the best time to visit?
The dry seasons, from June to September and December to February, concentrate animals near water. Rains bring green landscapes and good birding. See best time to visit Rwanda.
Is it crowded?
No, it is quiet compared with larger parks in neighbouring countries.
Combining With Gorillas
Can I see gorillas and wildlife together?
Yes, many itineraries pair Akagera with gorilla trekking, usually starting or ending at Kigali. See the itineraries in Rwanda safari itineraries.
What should I pack?
Neutral clothing, a hat, binoculars and insect repellent. See the packing list.
Seasons and Wildlife Behaviour
Does the season change what I see?
Yes. In the dry months animals gather around the lakes and the Akagera River, which makes finding herds and hippos simpler, while after rains the grass grows tall and predators can be harder to spot. Birders often prefer the wetter months.
