If you are early in planning, read the pillar guide first. The questions below are grouped by theme: routes and timing, visas and permits, travel logistics and what is included.

Where an answer depends on official policy or current schedules, we say so.

Overview

Routes and Timing

How many days do I need?

Fifteen to eighteen days is comfortable. Twelve is possible with flights.

What is the best season?

June to October for migration, though January and February are also good. See the best time page.

What order should I travel in?

Either direction works. Choose by flight availability and permit dates.

Visas

Visas and Permits

Do I need four visas?

The East Africa Tourist Visa covers Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda, so two visas cover all four countries. Tanzania requires its own. Check fees on official sites.

Do I need a permit per country?

For gorilla trekking, yes. See Uganda permits explained.

Are there age limits?

Yes for gorilla trekking. Rules are set by each authority.

Logistics

Logistics

Do I fly between countries?

Often. See the route and border guide.

What about luggage?

Soft bags suit light aircraft, which have limits.

Is it suitable for children?

Check age rules and pace. See safari with teenagers.

Inclusions

Inclusions and Costs

What does a tour include?

Normally accommodation, vehicle, guide, park fees and permits. Official tariffs apply and we do not list prices here.

What is excluded?

International flights, visas, insurance, tips and personal items.

How do I choose between countries?

Read Uganda vs Kenya vs Tanzania.

Wildlife

Wildlife and Experiences

Which animals can I see?

Gorillas and chimpanzees in the forests, and lions, elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebras and wildebeest on the plains, depending on the park and season. See East Africa wildlife guide.

Will I see the Big Five?

Not guaranteed, but possible on the plains. Rhinos are the hardest to find.

Can I see the migration and gorillas on one trip?

Yes, if you travel from July to October, when the herds are in the Mara and northern Serengeti and gorilla trekking continues.

Comfort

Comfort and Safety

Is the grand tour safe?

Travellers visit these countries safely every year with reputable operators. Check current government advice before departure and follow your guide.

Will I be tired?

The tour is active, so the pace matters. Ask for rest days and avoid back-to-back long transfers.

What kind of accommodation will I stay in?

It ranges from mid-range lodges to luxury tented camps. See safari accommodation types.

Can I stay connected?

Coverage is good in towns and patchy in parks. Download maps and documents beforehand.

Booking

Booking and Changes

Can the route be customised?

Yes. Tell us your priorities and dates, and the route can be reshaped around permit availability and flights.

What happens if a flight changes?

Your operator will rebook transfers where possible, which is why buffer days matter.

Can I extend with a beach stay?

Yes, at the coast or Zanzibar. Ask for it when planning.

Final

Final Questions

Who is the grand tour best for?

Travellers who want variety and are happy to travel actively. It is less suited to anyone who prefers a single base.

Where should I start planning?

Begin with the pillar guide, then choose an itinerary length and confirm permit dates.
