East Africa Primates Circuit Long Itinerary: 13 to 18 Days of Apes and Forests
A thirteen to eighteen day primates journey allows several gorilla and chimpanzee encounters, lakes and savanna in between, and the unhurried pace that makes treks more enjoyable.
With two to three weeks you can see how ape habitats change from the volcanoes of Rwanda to the lowland forests of western Uganda and the Tanzanian lakeshore. Rest days and gentle activities balance the demanding treks.
The outline below covers sixteen days, with notes for shorter and longer variations.
This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Why Longer Works
More days allow a second gorilla trek in the same country, which is often a better encounter than the first because you know what to expect. It also offers a margin when weather affects flights. Read the Kibale habituation experience and the gorilla habituation experience.
Savanna Between Forests
Primates trips benefit from a stretch of open country. Queen Elizabeth National Park offers game drives and the Kazinga Channel, while Murchison Falls adds the Nile and giraffes. These breaks help tired legs.
Rwanda in Detail
Rwanda's compact size makes it easy to add the capital and its history. See Kigali memorial sites and golden monkeys.
Tanzania Without Rush
On a long trip, spend two or three nights on the Tanzanian lakeshore. Gombe is known for its long research history, and Mahale for chimpanzees living on forested mountain slopes beside the lake. Both are remote; check schedules with your operator.
Eighteen Days and Beyond
At eighteen days you can add Lake Mburo, Mgahinga or Akagera. See Mgahinga for golden monkeys in Uganda.
Conservation and Community
A longer trip lets you see how primate tourism supports forests and neighbouring communities. Visit community projects, craft cooperatives and guided village walks, and ask how benefits are shared. Staying longer also reduces the number of flights and transfers per night, which is kinder to the environment. Read responsible and conservation travel for practical ideas, and choose lodges that employ local staff.
Day-to-Day Rhythm
Most days follow a pattern: early breakfast, a briefing at the park headquarters, a trek of a few hours, lunch at the lodge and an unscheduled afternoon. On transfer days, leave early, carry snacks and water and keep your camera within reach, since roadside scenes are often as memorable as the parks. Over two weeks, small habits such as drying boots overnight and rinsing muddy clothes keep you comfortable. Ask your guide to explain the plan each evening so that you always know the next morning's timing.
Fitness Over Two Weeks
Spacing the treks gives your legs time to recover. Gentle walks in the weeks before departure, including hills and stairs with a loaded daypack, are the best preparation. Do not start new boots on the trail; wear them in at home.
