Best Time for the East Africa Primates Circuit: Month by Month
The best overall window for the primates circuit is the drier months of June to September and December to February, though gorillas and chimpanzees can be seen in every month.
The primates live in wet montane and tropical forests, so rain is part of the experience. What changes is trail condition, visibility and comfort. Western Tanzania also has its own dry and wet pattern.
This page works through the stops one by one and then suggests the combined window.

Month by Month
| Months | Notes |

Uganda
Bwindi and Kibale are rainforest, so showers occur even in dry months. Drier months make steep paths less muddy. See Uganda seasons month by month, Bwindi in the dry season and Bwindi in the rainy season.
Rwanda
Volcanoes has high elevation and cool, often misty air. Dry months give clearer volcano views. See best time to visit Rwanda.
Tanzania
Western Tanzania follows its own rainfall rhythm, and boat and flight schedules suffer in heavy rain. Dry months generally give easier travel. See best time to visit Tanzania.
Low Season Benefits
In the rains, Uganda has offered discounted permits at times. See low-season permits. Check official announcements before planning.
Choosing Your Window
If your priorities are comfort and photography, aim for June to September. If you prefer quiet and green forest, consider early November or April. Book permits early for peak months.
Trail Conditions and Comfort
Dry weather makes steep forest paths easier to climb and descend, and it improves the chance of clear views from the volcano slopes. In wet months the same trails are slippery, and boots and gaiters become essential. Cloud and mist are normal in highland forests at any season, so photographers should not expect bright, clear light on every trek. Do not cancel a trek because of rain; rangers decide when it is safe to go.
Why Primates Are Not Strictly Seasonal
Gorillas and chimpanzees live in their forests all year, so you will not miss them by travelling in the rains. Fruit availability affects where chimpanzees feed, and gorilla groups move to find their preferred foods, so trek length varies from day to day rather than by month. Longer rains can make flights and boats in western Tanzania less reliable, which is why a buffer day is wise there. Flexibility is the best protection, whichever month you choose.
Holiday Periods and Permits
Permits for popular periods, such as northern-hemisphere summer holidays and December, sell out early. If your dates are fixed, secure permits first and build the rest of the route around them. If your dates are flexible, shoulder months such as early June or late November can be a good compromise between weather and availability.
Packing by Season
In the drier months, light layers, sun protection and a waterproof shell cover most needs. In the wet months add quick-drying trousers, waterproof boots and a dry bag for cameras. Highland nights are cold at any time of year, so a fleece is useful in every month.
