Uganda and Tanzania Short Itinerary: A Five to Seven Day Safari Plan
In a week you can combine one gorilla trek in Uganda with a compact Tanzania safari, but only by accepting a fast pace and a heavy reliance on scheduled flights.
A short combination is a sampler, not a deep exploration. The aim is one headline experience in each country, so you choose carefully and let the rest go. Travel days take up a large share of the time, and delays can eat into the plan.
The outline below suits energetic travellers with flexible expectations. If you can spare more time, the eight to twelve day itinerary is more relaxing, and our combination guide explains the wider picture.
This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.
At a glance
- Length: Six days, adjustable to five or seven
- Uganda: Bwindi gorilla trek
- Tanzania: Tarangire, Ngorongoro or Serengeti
- Pace: Fast, with early starts
- Best for: First sampler of both countries
Six-Day Outline
| Day | Plan |
|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive Entebbe, transfer to a nearby lodge or fly onward to the gorilla region where schedules allow |
| 2 | Travel to Bwindi, a long day by road or a short scheduled flight and transfer |
| 3 | Gorilla trek in the morning, rest and optional Batwa cultural visit in the afternoon |
| 4 | Return to Entebbe, then connect onward to northern Tanzania |
| 5 | Safari in Tarangire or the Ngorongoro Crater, depending on your arrival |
| 6 | Final game drive or crater descent, then transfer to Kilimanjaro or Arusha for departure |
Pacing Advice
Expect two significant transport days. Bwindi is remote, and unless you fly into the region, the road is a long day. Keep the trek day free of other commitments, because trekking can take anything from a short while to most of the day depending on where the gorilla family is. Read gorilla trekking fitness and preparation and see the Kampala to Bwindi route for road conditions.
Choosing Your Tanzania Stop
With only a day or two, pick one headline. The Ngorongoro Crater gives concentrated wildlife in a short visit, while Tarangire is quieter and strong for elephants in the dry months. A true Serengeti experience needs more time than a short trip allows, unless you fly in. Compare the options in the Ngorongoro Crater guide and the Tarangire guide.
Seven-Day Variation
With a seventh day, add a night in Uganda to break up the journey, perhaps at Lake Mburo on the way, or add a second night in Tanzania. A longer Tanzania stay lets you combine the crater with Lake Manyara or the start of the Serengeti. Another option is to replace the crater with a scheduled flight to the Serengeti if the budget allows.
Five-Day Variation
Five days is possible only if you reach the gorilla region quickly and accept a very compressed Tanzania segment, perhaps just one park. We usually suggest choosing one country instead, for example the Uganda gorilla safari packages, and leaving Tanzania for a future trip.
What to Prepare
Soft bags are essential for light aircraft, and layers cover both cool forest mornings and warm plains afternoons. See the East Africa packing list and the practical guide for luggage limits and entry requirements. Allow buffer time before any international departure.
