Uganda to Tanzania Route and Border Guide: Flights, Roads and Transfers

Most safari travellers fly between Uganda and Tanzania with a connecting service, because the land route to the northern parks is very long and not scenic enough to justify.

Uganda and Tanzania share a border in the Lake Victoria region, but the main safari areas lie far apart, with Lake Victoria and a long stretch of country between them. The practical choice is to fly, usually via a connecting hub, and to arrive at Kilimanjaro or Arusha for the northern circuit.

This page explains the options and how to plan the transfer. It supports the wider combination guide and ties in with the practical guide.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Overview

Flying Between the Two

Entebbe is the international gateway for Uganda, and Kilimanjaro serves northern Tanzania. Because schedules change, check current options with your operator rather than relying on assumptions about direct services. Connections may route through a regional hub, which adds time, so allow a full day for the transfer. Read Uganda airports and international flights for more on Entebbe.

Why

Why Not Drive

A land crossing exists near Lake Victoria, but the distance from the Ugandan parks to northern Tanzania is great, the roads vary, and the journey would take multiple days with little wildlife viewing. For most safari itineraries, flying is the sensible choice. If you enjoy overland travel and have time, ask us about a custom route.

Planning

Planning the Pivot Day

Treat the transfer as its own day. Finish the last Uganda activity at least a day before the flight, return to Entebbe and overnight nearby, and arrive in Tanzania with a buffer before the first safari. This protects against delays and lets you start fresh. The medium itinerary demonstrates the pattern.

Documents

Documents and Immigration

Carry a passport with adequate validity and blank pages, and check the visa requirements for each country on official sites. Tanzania requires its own visa, separate from the East Africa Tourist Visa. Health requirements, including yellow fever rules that depend on your travel history, should be verified in advance. See the East Africa visa guide and health and vaccinations.

Light

Light Aircraft and Luggage

If you add scheduled light-aircraft flights, such as to the Serengeti, soft bags and strict weight limits apply. Keep checked bags compact. Ask your operator about storing excess luggage in Arusha or Entebbe. See flying safaris.

Sample

Sample Transfer Day

A typical pivot day begins with a relaxed breakfast near Entebbe, a transfer to the airport with generous time before the flight, a connection through a regional hub and an arrival at Kilimanjaro in the afternoon or evening, followed by a transfer to Arusha for the night. The first Tanzania safari day then starts fresh. Resist squeezing a game drive into arrival day, because delays are common and tired travellers see less. Your operator will also give you emergency contact numbers for both ends.

Ground

Ground Transfers

Your operator arranges transfers at both ends, including airport pickup in Entebbe and meeting you at Kilimanjaro. Confirm names, flight numbers and pickup points in advance, and keep a phone number to hand. For local roads see the Uganda road routes guide and getting around East Africa.
