Uganda and Tanzania Long Itinerary: Thirteen to Eighteen Days

A fortnight or more lets you visit the main parks of both countries at an unhurried pace, adding a second Uganda highlight and a deeper Serengeti stay.

Long itineraries reward travellers who want fewer rushed mornings and more repeat game drives. You can add Murchison Falls or Lake Bunyonyi in Uganda, and a second or third Serengeti region in Tanzania. The extra time also builds in rest days and buffer for travel disruption.

The outline below runs to sixteen days and can be trimmed or stretched. It builds on the medium itinerary and follows the logic explained in our combination guide.

This guide is part of our Uganda road routes and driving guide. When you are ready to plan, see our Uganda safari packages or the Ameera Africa Safaris Uganda tours homepage.

Uganda

Uganda in Depth

Adding Murchison Falls gives you big game on the Nile, including a boat trip beneath the falls. The Kampala to Murchison route describes the road. With a longer stay you can also visit Lake Bunyonyi for a restful lake day after the gorilla trek, which many travellers find a welcome change of pace.

Kidepo

Kidepo as an Alternative

Remote Kidepo Valley is a wilderness option for travellers wanting a more secluded Uganda chapter, usually reached by a scheduled flight or a long journey. Compare it in the Kidepo guide and see driving distances between parks to judge the effort.

Tanzania

Tanzania in Depth

A long Tanzania stay can add Lake Manyara and a second Serengeti camp, perhaps one in the central Seronera area and another in the north or west depending on the season. See the Serengeti migration calendar. Consider a balloon flight or a walking safari on a private concession if you want something special.

Rest

Rest and Buffer Days

Build in at least two easy days, one after the gorilla trek and one before international departure. This protects against weather, delays and fatigue. If you plan a Zanzibar finish, see Uganda safari and Zanzibar beach holiday for ideas.

Making

Making the Most of the Extra Time

The real gift of a long itinerary is optionality. If the weather is poor on a chimpanzee morning, a spare day lets you try again, and if a gorilla family is far away you can rest afterwards without a flight to catch. Use the slack for a village walk, a birding morning or a quiet afternoon at the lodge. Photographers can plan return visits to the best light, and our photography safari guide explains how to prepare.

Eighteen-Day

Eighteen-Day Variation

Add a Rwenzori hike, a second Serengeti region, a night at Lake Mburo or time on Lake Victoria. The route stays the same, but each stop deepens. Your operator can tailor the structure, and our practical guide covers the logistics.
