Overview

Permits and Rules

Do I need a permit for each country?

Yes. Gorilla permits are national, so Uganda, Rwanda and Congo permits are separate. A trip trekking in two countries needs two permits.

How far ahead should I book?

As early as possible for peak months. Permits are limited, and your whole itinerary hangs on the dates. See Uganda permits explained.

What are the rules during a trek?

Keep your distance, speak quietly, do not eat near animals and follow your ranger. See tracking rules.

Fitness

Fitness and Trekking

How fit do I need to be?

Moderate fitness. Trails can be steep and muddy, but porters and walking sticks help. See fitness and preparation.

How long does a trek last?

It varies with where the group is. Some are short, others take most of the day.

Gorilla or chimpanzee: which is harder?

Chimpanzees move fast through the canopy, which can be tiring. Read gorilla vs chimpanzee trekking.

Routes

Routes and Timing

Can I combine all three countries?

Yes. See the route and border guide.

What is the best season?

June to September and December to February are driest. See the best time page.

How many days do I need?

Five to seven days for Uganda and Rwanda, ten or more for Tanzania as well.

Costs

Costs and Inclusions

What does a tour include?

Usually permits, accommodation, transfers, guides and park entry. Official tariffs apply and change, so we do not list prices here.

What is not included?

International flights, visas, insurance, tips and personal items, unless stated.

Is it cheaper in the low season?

Sometimes, depending on official announcements and lodge rates.

Species

Species and Wildlife

Which monkeys can I see besides apes?

Golden monkeys, colobus, blue monkeys and vervets appear in Uganda and Rwanda, depending on the forest. See Uganda primates and monkeys.

Are there other animals?

Forest elephants, duikers and many birds live in these forests, though sightings are unpredictable.

Can I take photographs?

Yes, without flash. Keep a respectful distance and follow ranger instructions.

Planning

Planning and Fitness

What if I cannot manage a steep trek?

Ask about sectors with gentler terrain, hire porters and allow extra time. Rangers can arrange a slower pace in some cases.

Can older travellers do this circuit?

Yes, many do, with careful pacing and good preparation. Choose a medium or long itinerary with rest days.

What should I do if the weather turns bad?

Trek leaders decide whether to continue. Bring waterproofs and a flexible attitude.

Can I split the trip across two seasons?

Yes, but each trip needs separate permits and flights.
